Before we go on, I would just like to say, irrespective of however it looks on the chapter, I am not trying to offend anyone with Valerie and Nick's impersonation.
I'm not saying that all Scottish people sound like that. None of my Scottish friends do.
However, we do have stereotypes and these stereotypes are there because they are common.
I apologize if i went a bit overboard with it though and please enjoy the chapter :)
Valerie
I oversleep the next morning and both my parents don't make a move to wake me up. By the time I make it to school, it's almost time for first period. Luckily, I make it in before the late bell goes and Jessica gives me a knowing look.
Picking out my books, I head into first period English with my best friend at my side. Quickly, we get seated at the back as Mr. Jones begins handing out the scripts from out last test. When mine plops splat onto my desk, I see a big A- staring back at me in harsh red.
Mom and dad are not going to like this, I sigh warily before shoving the script in my book bag.
Our teacher hands out our work and I get busy with my argumentative essay on whether or not contraceptives should be made available in high schools.
My classes roll about in a blur and I'm barely able to concentrate. So much so that when it's finally lunch time, I rush out of fourth period Geography as fast as I can.
Jessica, Elliot and I head over to our usual table after grabbing our food.
"Heard about Hunter?" Elliot, Jessica's twin asks.
"No. What about him?"
"Well, he tried to join ballet yesterday because of all the pretty girls but fell during a pose and twisted his ankle."
This earns chuckles from both Jess and I. As we continue to make small talk, I begin to loosen up and the stress of the first half of the school day rolls off my shoulders. Scanning my eyes around the cafeteria, I decide to people watch.
The nerds are over at their usual table, engrossed in whatever nerds talk about. At the corner, a mix of kids sit huddled together, with some of them singing while the others lightly tap a rhythym on their lunch table. A few kids sit alone, listening to music and keeping to themselves. Then there are the usual misfits and in the centre of it all lies the most coveted position; the table where cheerleaders and football players sit.
That used to be my table.
Picking up a fry, I pretend to eat it while continuously watching the table.
My eyes zero in on him and I freeze in place; really dark hair, stormy blue eyes and beautiful pouty lips.
I think he feels my gaze on him or something because he turns to the side and his eyes lock in on mine. Offering a small smile, I wave uncertainly but he just turns away like he didn't see me.
Oh well, at least I didn't get my hopes up.
"Why won't you just break up with that asshole?" Jess growls, following my line of sight. "I mean seriously Val, he won't even talk to you in public!"
"But I like him." I reply weakly.
Elliot frowns at me, scrunching up his nose. "How can you like a guy that treats you like shit just because you're no longer like his other friends?" he asks.
"He doesn't treat me like shit." I retort.
"Oh, yeah." Elliot replies. "He just doesn't acknowledge your existence in public."
