"GO! SAVE YOURSELF!" a desperate voice echoed around the gloomy forest as dark creatures began rising from the shadows of the trees. "I won't," she said defiantly, "you need me.....they need me...." He gazed into her hazel eyes, taking in every inch of her green-flecked irises.

"You must. It's the only way. One of us need to survive." He touched her pale arm lightly, and gently squeezed it. "You go! Let them have me instead!" she persisted, stepping closer to him. He shook his head. "My time is running out, you are more valuable." The translucent moonlight highligted his deep red curls and made his emerald green eyes glow even brighter. She stared at him, knowing that he was right, knowing that the time had come. "Please go," he whispered, and leaned in towards her.

All at once, time took a stand still. The wind stopped howling, the rustling of the leaves quietened. The charcoal creatures froze, the horrible screaming seemed a million miles away. He untangled his fingers from her light brown hair and pulled away. "For me."

The world rushed back into action. The wind howled even louder, making the trees dance violently. The creatures of the murky darkness swooped down at them, their lazer-red eyes fixed on their target. She stared at him, her hazel eyes wild with fear. There was only one thing she could do.

Waiting for the right moment, she stood by him, grasping his hand tightly. He scoured the area, standing head-strong, ready to defend her. The two let go, facing opposite directions, with enough emotion to challenge the creatures.

Suddenly, he fell to the ground. He spiky talon latched onto his ankle, dragging him away. "NO!" she cried, running towards him. His leafy green eyes locked onto her, as he watched her scrambled towards him. "No!" he yelled, "remember what I told you!" She halted to a stop. How could she forget? Inhaling a deep breath of oxygen, she spun around to face the maze of dark creatures.

Scanning the pathway, she found a small gap in the wall of beasts. Glancing back at him, with a hopeful look in her eyes, she sprinted. Her heart thumped in her ears, her feet paced in rhythm with her swinging arms. Dodging the scratchy claws and uneven branches, she continued down the path, slowly disappearing into the forest.

His eyes didn't leave her for a second. He knew that his time was over. He hoped that hers wasn't. The screeching beasts circled in on him, beating their limbs onto his near-dead body. As he saw her disappear, he lifted his head, and mumbled with his last ounce of energy, "I love you. Always and forever."
