Chapter 2

••Ashton's POV••

The sound of Calum's alarm, wakes us up with it's obnoxious beeping.
'Calum,' Michael says,
'If you don't turn that thing off I swear I will shove it down your throat.' Calum groans, and says,
'I'd forgotten how pissy you are in the morning.' Before hitting the alarm and turning it off.
'Would it be really bad if I turned that clock into a guinea pig or something?' I ask, sitting up and yawning widely.
'Yes, the squeaking would drive us up the wall,' Says Michael,
'Now who wants the privilege of waking Luke up?'
'Not it!' Both him and Calum say quickly.
'I hate you guys.' I say, getting out of bed and walking over to Luke's.
'Lukey,' I whisper in his ear,
'Lukey!'
'Not now Elsa.' He mumbles,
'I'm tired.'
'OI LUKE!' Michael shouts. He shoots bolt upright, head butting me as he does so.
'Ow, shit!' He shouts, clutching his head.
'Why the hell were you so close?' He asks.
'Trying to wake you up, now c'mon, we need to get dressed, breakfast is in ten minutes.' I tell him, sprinting to the bathroom shouting,
'Dibs on being first in the shower!'

We sit down on the bench at the table, I pull a plate of pancakes towards me and heap Nutella on top of them.
'You do know you'll be sick if you eat all that, right?' Luke asks,
'Are you sure you know me?' I ask,
'This is Nutella we're talking about.'
'He's got a point there.' Calum says as I dig into my breakfast.

Miss Everlark walks down the table, handing out our timetables, she reaches us and I glance at my first lesson. Oh you've got to be kidding me! History of rituals first thing on a Monday morning, come on! I grab Michael's out of his hand and check his, raising is first for him, lucky bastard.
'Ugh! History of rituals first.' Luke groans.
'Same,' I tell him,
'At least we're not on our own.'
'Yeah I guess.'

I sit at my desk, doodling on a piece of scrap paper as the teacher, Mr Higgins, drones on and on about how the first High Casters of Necromancy, learnt how to send ghosts over to the other side of the veil using different herbs, runes and enchantments. It would be really interesting if he didn't speak in such a dull tone, like here is the last place on earth he wants to be. Well I guess lecturing a bunch of bored teenagers can't be the most exciting of jobs.

Finally the bell goes and I head to my next lesson, runes. I walk into the room and spot Calum sitting in the far corner talking, well flirting with a dark haired girl. I walk over to them and tap him on the shoulder,
'Who's this Cal?' I ask him, He and the girl turn to me,
'Oh hey Ash, this is Rena, she's new here. Rena, this is Ashton.'
'Hi.' She says, smiling at me.
'Hey.' I reply, awkwardly grinning back. Thankfully Miss Everlark walks in and we all sit down as she says,
'Settle down, settle down. Now, today we are learning about banishing runes.'

We all turn to look as she draws the symbol on the board.
'A banishment rune is used on only the most troublesome of ghosts. It imprisons them in the worst part of the other side of the veil, limbo.' We all lean forward, interested.
'Limbo is a terrible place, the ghost is trapped there in pure nothingness for all of time, all them they can do is wander for the rest of existence. Neither living nor moving on. That is why we only use it in the worst type of ghost.' As the lesson continues, we learn about the properties of the banishing rune and how to cast it correctly. Calum, it seems, is a natural.

Calum and I walk into the dining room for lunch, him and the new girl Rena deep in flirtation- sorry, conversation. We catch sight of Luke, Elsa and Michael sitting at a table and we all head over, Cal introducing Rena as we sit down.

'So,' Michael says as we eat,
'Are you guys still up for tonight?'
'What's happening tonight?' Elsa asks, 'We're going down to the woods to practice raising.' Luke tells her,
'You can both come if you want.' He says, looking at both his girlfriend and Rena.
'I'm okay thanks.' Elsa says,
'I've still got to unpack.'
'Yeah same, I'll have to pass as well.' Rena tells us.
'Oh, okay.' Calum says, looking slightly crestfallen as we all head to our next lessons.

We all walk down to the woods that ring the boundary of the school. It's been a while since we did a raising and we're all a bit excited. As we reach the edge, I fall behind, bending to tie my shoelace. When I look up, the boys have been swallowed by the darkness, which seems to bend around them, concealing them from my sight. I stand up and follow them in, if I get lost I can easily transport myself out. One of the perks of being a freak.

I'm deep in the woods now and I can't see or hear the boys. I catch sight of a whitish-blue glow and head towards it, it may be a candle if some sort. As I reach it, I see that it's not a candle at all, but a girl- a ghost to be exact, with long, dark, wavy hair and blue-grey eyes, sobbing as tears race down her cheeks.
'Are you okay?' I ask her, stepping forwards out of the shadows. She catches one sight of me, and then, her face filled with terrified anguish, she starts to scream.
