Chapter 5

••Ashton's POV••

I wander down the corridor on my way to the library. I have an essay on the medieval Necromancers and their more...unorthodox shall we say, methods of banishment and raising due tomorrow. I was actually meant to do it over the summer but well, I didn't. What can I say? I'm a hardcore procrastinator. The others are back in our dorm room, having done the essay during the whole two month holiday we had, probably playing video games. Luke's not angry anymore, just slightly down so that's all good...well, goodish.

I'm reach the end of the passage and am about to turn the corner when I hear some shuffling and someone swearing. I walk round to see a ghost looking for somewhere to hide, she turns to face me and I realise who it is.

'Hazel? What are you doing up here?' Her shoulders sag in relief when she sees it's just me,

'Oh thank god, Ashton! I was in the woods when your teacher told your friend to get the caretaker, he got there and was doing a thing with yellow tape, cordoning off the area and he was coming towards me. I had to get away so I teleported and ended up here.'

'You need to hide!' I tell her, 'Every person in this building is trained to spot ghosts, they'll probably leave you alone, but they might decide to banish you because you've been here so long and it would be kinder than leaving you here to F-' I break off.

'Shit!'

She looks at me, narrowing her eyes.

'What do you mean? Leaving me here to what?' I inwardly grimace, I'm an idiot.

'Err nothing?' I say.

'Ashton.' She says warningly.

'Well if you stay here to long, you Fade.'

Her face goes pale, which is an impressive feat for a ghost.

'Fade?' She asks,

'You stop existing, you're not on the other side, you're just gone, forever.'

'And why,' She says, her voice getting louder,

'Didn't you tell me this before! I've been dead for a fucking month, how long do I have left?'

'It takes a year, if a ghost hasn't passed over by then, then they Fade. But in the time leading up to that, their start to become more transparent, when it's about a week before it happens, even a Necromancer can't come into contact with them, they just pass through. Their glow also starts to dissapear.

The final stage, when it's six hours until they're completely gone is when they look completely alive, they don't glow, they can come into contact with any living thing, though only animals and Necromancers can see them and they look completely alive and can pass off as a living person. No one, only specially trained Necromancers can tell what's happening to them once they're at that stage. And then they're gone, they just vanish into nothingness. We call them 'Faders' for obvious reasons.'

'So I've got eleven months to find out what's keeping me here, or I'm gone go good? Why didn't you tell me this!' She shouts.

'Well I was hoping it wouldn't come to that.' I tell her,

'I thought we'd probably get you over long before that.'

She gives me a long, hard look before saying,

'Okay, but tell me one thing.'

'Okay?'

'How do the trained Necromancers tell if the Fader is human or not?'
