He is the main protagonist in the Yokai Watch Anime. Cartoon? Canime. Canime is a new word.
CANIME- A FUNNY ANIME THAT DOES NOT HAVE A CERTAIN END GOAL AND HAS THE LIGHTHEARTED HUMOR OF A CARTOON, BUT THE STYLE AND CONTINUOUS STORY OF AN ANIME
I made a new word. Now if you have already seen an anime like this...its a canime.
Now Yokai watch is indeed an anime. It has a story and episodes have plots....but it doesn't have a certain end goal. I mean it's about him going through life and finding Yokai. It doesn't really have an end goal.
Ash- Become a pokemon master. End( It does not end when he wins a league. It also seems like he won't win any time soon since he's going to school. I bet, to keep a trend, the writers will make him fail school, in pokemon Sun and moon)
Superhero anime-Defeat evil villain. End
Slice of life is the type of Anime "Yokai Watch" would be in. But with some cartoon comedy and mythical creatures. Just watch it.

Nate is an average kid. He goes to school. Has friends. Gets a 75 on a test. That kind of average. He's "Heroic" but not the "I'm gonna fight an evil villian with my magical sword in the name of all that is good and justice". He helps Yokai. Like just helps with there problems and is nice.
In the games he fights an evil villain. But He's usually helping and befriending Yokai or defeating a bad Yokai
For instance in the anime.
A Yokai named "So Soree" is making nate do bad things, like he's in a group jump rope thing, when they are about to jump for the 100th time, he stops. Or he interupts someone or something like that. Then he sais
"So sorry" in a fake or exaggerated way. Then he does it again.
Nate then tries to defeat So sorre.
Example in the games, walkappa, a kappa yokai

Wants fish(he lives near a river) so nate helps him.
You:Flareon, I don't help people fish. If they can fish, do it yourself. Obviously he's a super goody two shoes.
How bout this? In an anime episode, he's playing a videogame with friends. He sees his friends have gotten farther than him in the game.
He tries to pretend he's sick, so he can miss school and play videogames. He gets Yokai to make him seem like he has a fever. It works but he then has a real fever. Then his mom takes the game away.
Sorry I'm spoiling, but he's a normal guy, like you or me. He's not heroic nor is he mischievous. He's in the middle.
He is not a carbon copy of assh Ketchup or bald punch guy man. He's like you. But slightly nicer and with ghost friends. He's relatable. The problems he in they are relatable. Considering that the Yokai basically do things that are daily annoyances. Like forgetting things, or oversleeping or your friends acting weird. It's relatable and Nate is relatable. It can be a truly funny and awesome anime.
Or canime.
