Chapter 36
Allie
"How is he doin'?" Graham asked, joining the little bird watching group.
But instead of birds, we were watching my dum mate and his stupid brother have a 'family discussion'. If I had learnt anything from any of my family discussions is that they all ended in blood.
"They're just talkin'," Callum told him because I was too nervous to talk.
It was like someone had just made my worst nightmare come true and was forcing me to watch it. It made my stomach stir and my hands shake. I was even biting my nails for Christ shake.
"What about?" he asked.
"He just pulled out the Bonnie card," Archie reported.
"Shh," Malcolm hushed, turning our attention back to Nick and Hector.
Why did he have to do it? I don't care if he wanted to because Hector was his brother or he thought he was protecting everyone. The bottom line was I didn't want to see my mate get ripped apart.
"Callum, if Hector makes the slightest move towards him, I'm goin' out there," I warned him, not taking my eyes off my sitting brown wolf.
"And I won't stop you," he said, cupping my shoulder, "Archie, go round them up. It shouldn't be long."
Archie nodded before heading back down the corridor.
Why wasn't' he doin' anythin'? I wanted to scream. Neither of them were doing anything. Nick just sat there like a lost dog as Hector paced back and forth allowing his anger to fuel him.
"That's it. I've had enough," I growled, now losing all logical thinking.
Before I could even touch the doorknob, Malcolm's arms came around my waist, locking him to his body.
"Don't you even think about it?" Malcolm growled, his grip tightening, "If you go out there now, Nick is as good as dead."
All I wanted was for that thought to calm me down but it only made my heart race. I wasn't planning on being told what to do, especially when it came to the safety of my mate. I also wasn't planning on being wrong either.
"Callum, they're all ready to go," Archie said, pacing down the corridor.
"Where's Tarna and Bee?" Malcolm asked.
"Tarna's takin' Bee back to her room, she'll be safer there," Archie answered.
Malcolm nodded but didn't look happy with the idea. Apparently, he was the only Patterson that wasn't going to argue whether or not his mate fought or not.
"What about Bleu?" Graham asked.
"Back there," Archie nodded, gesturing back down the corridor to the void, "She's waitin' for you."
Graham nodded, surprising me too. He was also on board with his little witch fightin'? Oh my God, there goes a flyin' pig!
"Wait, what's happenin'?" Callum asked, looking out the window.
Malcolm allowed me to be free and I didn't wait a second to find myself up against the glass again.
Hector was now stalking his way towards a now standing Nick. Even from here, I could see the pleading in Nick's eyes. He didn't want Hector to make the move. Because once he did, you couldn't take it back.
Clearly, Hector wasn't listening. He pounced on him, biting deep into Nick's neck.
"Nick!" I screamed, bursting from the doors.
"Now!" Callum's roared was the last thing I heard before the world broke into chaos.
My nimble wolf legs were able to get me to my mate fast enough to win the element of surprise. My enemy stumbled back, giving up his kill. My mate, got to his feet, not giving him a second chance.
Lightning and thunder tore through the sky, turning the natural blues to a dark purple. The wind grew into a blowing blizzard, a creation beyond the power of Mother Nature. The war scatted further into the forest, our numbers growing as the other half of our pack joined us.
When we turned back to our target, he was gone. We had little time to focus on him, now crowded by fighting wolves.
In a blink of an eye, I was pulled to the ground. I didn't recognise the wolf. Her hot breath stung my eyes as gruel dripped from her mouth and into my fur.
I growled back, a threat of my own but I was in no position. She moved her paw to my neck, applying pressure and cutting off my air supply.
There was a snarl from behind me that I had first thought came from her. The wolf ignored it until she was ripped from my body. I saw the chance and took it, moving to my feet, making my legs groaned in pain. To my right, I spied my mate, pinning the she-wolf that had attacked me to the ground. His paw was in the same position hers was, pressing on her throat. It didn't take long for life to drain from her eyes and her head to lop to the side.
Movement to my right caught my eyes before I spied a grey wolf, snarling at my mate. My mate's back was turned to him so he wouldn't see him coming.
Before the wolf had a chance, I pounced on him, digging my crawls into his back. The wolf whaled in pain, before dropping to the ground. Releasing my claws, I delivered a quick cut to his throat and watched as the rich red blood dripped from his neck.
In the chaos, I was separated from him. Every time I tried to make my way with him, a wolf would come out of nowhere or someone needed my help to save them. I was beginning to lose count of how many wolves I had killed and my body was feeling the effects of the brutal treatment.
"Ahhhh!"
My body froze when I recognised the female screams and the wolf grumbles. To my right, a little further away from the larger battle I spotted them.
My brother's witch, on the ground unconscious and my brother shaking his head from a knock. A large grey wolf stood, snarling at him, someone that I had recognised. My human brain matched his wolf head with a human name. Davy.
I stayed in the shadows, not wanting to be seen until he needed me. Getting over the shock, my brother shot to his feet, threatening growls escaping his lips. Slowly, he made his way over to his mate, protecting her at all cost. The grey wolf made the first attack. He was aiming for my brother's neck, but he had dived and snatched the grey wolf's paws between his teeth. The wolf whaled before fighting back by biting my brother between the shoulder blades. My brother immediately released his death grip on the wolf's paw, stumbling back.
I swallowed, my fear growing, knowing that that was an old wound. It wouldn't heal like it used to.
The wolf gave him little time to rest. He caught him off guard when he gave a slight look to his mate, forcing my brother to the ground. I thought he would pin him there and finish him, but I was wrong. I guess they still had unfinished business.
The grey wolf took his tail between his teeth and started to pull him like a rag doll. I struggled to watch as my brother squirmed, struggling to be free. Once the wolf was finished with his tail, he jumped on him, kicking him in the gut before backing off. That left my brother winded and wounded.
I saw the sickly look in his eyes before I realized what would come next. Before he had a chance to, I bolted over to my brother, barely stopping once I was on top of him. The wolf halted in his tracks at the sound of my threatening snarls. We had some unfinished business too.
I made no move on the wolf, instead I decided to protect my brother. Something I had forgotten to do.
The wolf's growls grew, warning me that this was how it ended. I closed my eyes and willed it to happen.
A growl.
A grunt.
A snap.
I opened my eyes and my mate had the wolf pinned against the tree barking at him. They weren't threats. They weren't warnings. Instead they were the last words the wolf would ever hear.
My mate dug his teeth into the wolf's neck and didn't let go until he was limb and lifeless. Letting go of him, the wolf fell to the ground like a dead hemp of earth. I whimpered a thank you to him, before my attention was brought to my brother underneath me.
Getting off him, I helped him to stand. He did so, with protest before he limped his way over to his mate.
He shifted, quickly followed by Nick and myself.
"Bleu," he said, shaking her shoulder, "Bleu wake up."
It was only then that I noticed her cut and bleeding forehead and the scape to her shoulder. God what did he do, drag her off?
"Graham, you need to get her back to the house?" I told him, though I'm sure he probably knew, "are you able too?"
He looked back at me, dread filling his eyes. He didn't have the strength too.
"I'll help you, Brother," I told him, "I'm not goin' anywhere."
He smiled, turning back to Bleu.
"It's heatin' up in there," Nick stated from behind us, "If you're goin' to get her back, you need to do it now."
Graham and I both nodded, moving to our feet.
"You better tell Liv and Amy to try and get out with Bee now," he told us.
I made a mental note to do that when we got the chance.
"Thank you," Graham said to Nick, offering out his hand.
Nick took it willingly, building yet another bridge.
"Stay safe," I told him, just as Graham shifted.
"I will," Nick promised, scooping Bleu in his arms and lying her over Graham's back.
Quickly pecking his lips, I shifted and started to support my brother on the way back to the house.
