Max's POV

I follow Chloe down the hallway and through a door at the end of the hall. The room was pitch black so I turned on the light on my phone. I moved it around and saw a huge staircase standing in front of me. Chloe took my hand. "Come on MadMax. You can go first up the stairs if you're chicken shit. I'll be right behind you."

I walk in front of Chloe and head up the long flight of stairs with her following right behind me. "Did you suggest me going first so you can look at my ass?"

Chloe laughed. "You should know the answer to that by now Caulfield." Chloe's right that was a dumb question... she's lucky I'm wearing my good jeans today...

"Jesus Chloe, why are we going up these stairs? It's never ending and my legs are getting dumb."

"Come on Max! We're hella getting in our daily cardio right now."

"Wow. I was honestly hoping we would do something else to get in our daily cardio other than climbing up mount everest."

"Maxine. Don't tease if you're not gonna follow through..."

I roll my eyes and continue to ascend the stairs of death. Damn I cannot feel my legs. After a more than a while, we finally get to the top of the stairs. Panting, I see the words 'rooftop' on the door in front of me. Before I can reach forward and open the door, Chloe cuts her hand in front of mine. "Let me do the honors, mate."

I take a step back. "After you, captain."

Chloe opens the door, letting the moonlight and fresh air in from the outside. The stars were twinkling up in the sky, the shadow of the trees in the distance, it was beautiful. Chloe walked to the edge of the building and I follow right behind her and stand at her side. "It's so...."

"...strange." Chloe cuts me off.

I look at her in wonder. "What?"

Chloe continues to look at the view. "Life Max. It's just.... strange."

"What do you mean?"

"You see the stars in the sky, right? Well they could possibly be long gone by now. It takes a while for us humans to actually see them, but when we do, they could already be dead. People come and people go, but they do for a reason. It's not at random, at least I don't think so. Things happen for a reason. We met when we were little. When I gave you that gumball you weren't allowed to have. That wasn't on accident. You're parents could've prevented you from being my friend, but they didn't. We then became hella best friends. Then... my dad. That was his fate. That wasn't an 'accident'. That was supposed to happen. That's what fate had in store for him. Then you left. And I was crushed. I almost lost myself. On top of that my mom got remarried to a prick and I was alone. I ruined my chances of anything. I got into trouble. I put my life in so much danger. I was torn. But then you came back. My world, then, started going back to normal. I felt... happy again, to have you at my side. I was so close Max. But you saved me. See, everything happens for a reason. But I guess what I'm trying to say is, what would happen if my dad didn't die. Or what would happen if I slip off the edge. Or if Joyce didn't get remarried... or if you didn't leave. What would happen then? As I said Max. It's just.... strange.... to think about."

Chloe's thoughts remind me of when I went back in time to stop Chloe from bringing me to the junkyard that day with Warren... and when I refused to go to Blackwell through another photo... the memories break my heart little by little. The more Chloe spoke, the more I started to hurt on the inside. "All I can say Chloe..." Chloe finally turns her head a bit, looking at me through the corner of her eye. I put my hand on her back and step closer to her. "...is that if anything had ch-changed, we woudn't be here now." Chloe then turned her head, weaving her fingers through my hair with one hand and wrapping the back of my neck with the other, she pulled me in close and passionately kissed me like she never had before. I wrapped my arms around her waist, bringing her closer so we were pressed firmly together. Shit this would be a hella priceless picture. We came up for air. Chloe looked into my eyes and gently smiled at me. She put my hands on my shoulders and turned me around. In the corner was a blanket, laid out, with a couple lit candles and belgian waffles in the middle of the blanket. Chloe always knows how to make me smile. Chloe takes my hand and brings me over to the little moonlight picnic. I sit down and she seats herself next to me. I start to chow down on some semi warm waffles while Chloe just gazed at the stars, occasionally laughing at how loud I was chewing. "Chloe please I'm eating. You do it too."

"Sorry sorry. You're just... really cute." Chloe looked at me and smiled. She continued to smile and stare and I just rolled with it. I shouldn't be self conscious around her in the first place.

After I was done, I started to play around with the fire, quickly weaving my hand in and out, while Chloe still continued to watch. Of course, me being Max Caulfield, my hand started to burn... I guess I wasn't quick enough. Chloe immediately grabbed my hand and lightly held it in hers. "Okay, I think Max here is starting to have a little oo much fun. You should stop... you're gonna hurt yourself."

"Nooo I isn't!"

"You is." I pouted at Chloe and Chloe leaned in to kiss my pouted lips. Smooth. "Well Max, now that you've had your waffles, I think it's hella time to burn it off with a couple laps? Don't ya think?"

"Yeah. Splish Splash!"
