"Dinner!" Apparently 20 minutes had already past. I heaved myself off the beanbag, my thoughts still busily running through the traffic of my brain.
The aroma of spaghetti and meatballs drifted into my nose. Because of the coziness of their home, the dining room table looked like one from such a long time ago in Ireland or something. The two kids were sitting at the table, jumping in their seats excitedly, while Josie sat across from them laughing.
I took my seat across from Gwenny, next to Josie. Lucinda and Rupert sat at the throne seats at each end of the table.
"Yum. Spaghetti and meatballs!" The little boy said.
"Robert, napkin on your lap," Lucinda told him from across the table. He immediately did so, then shoved his hand straight across the table towards me.
"You can call me Bam-bam." His smile widened as I shook his hand.
"You can call me Gwen."
"I'm Josie," Josie smiled.
"Mommy, mommy, Gwenny and Gwen have the same names!" Bam-bam exclaimed.
"I know sweetie," she took his hand. "Let's give thanks." Josie grabbed onto my hand. I cautiously held Ruperts as Lucinda began to give thanks. "Thank you nature for giving us this blessing of fresh food. Let's dig in!" We all released hands and started eating our food. All mouths were full of yummy things my friends had provided for us.
After about five minutes, some of us stopped eating so ferociously and quickly.
"So, do you do anything special? Gwen, Josie?" Rupert asked in an Irish accent.
Josie and I exchanged worried glances.
"What do you mean by that?" Josie took another bite of spaghetti nonchalantly, not making eye contact with Rupert.
"Sports? In America?"
"Oh, yes, of course. I like photography, acting, other stuff like that." Josie said. She had always been less athletic. I was tough, played lot of sports, good at lying. Which was not always a good thing.
"I play lacrosse, field hockey, and track. I also like...uh...food." Gwenny and Bam-bam giggled at my reply. Josie stifled a little laugh as well. Even Lucinda and Rupert grinned a little.
It was almost like we were...a family. But they didn't know my little secret.
