Sometimes Truths Hurt More
We ran for a long time, a deathly silence looming over us like a storm cloud. We ran until my knees began to buckle with each step, until my breaths sounded like fingernails against a chalkboard and my eyes began to burn from the cold. To steady my sudden vertigo I watched my feet as they sunk into the sand with each heavy step. Matilda and Edward saw what I was doing and tried it too. It seemed to work for them too, so, as a result, everyone had a steady rhythm going until Logan stopped running, looking exhausted and weary. As I opened my mouth to question his sudden halt, Logan started speaking.
"I give up. Just kill me and get it over and done with. There is no way that I'll be able to live with the guilt of sending vampires to kill you. You. My friends," he said, sighing, "Who am I kidding? I may as well just kill myself. No matter how much you guys hate me right now, there's no way you would kill me, right?"
This kind of puzzled me. Did it mean he was saying his goodbyes before a suicide attempt? So I decided to totally evade the direct offer that Logan proposed and changed the subject to something that would need further conversation. "Why did you betray us?" I asked, a bit too suspiciously. As I said it I made sure that I hid my expression and kept a blank, stone-cold look on my face. He had better not say the 'it was my job' bull.
Studying my expression carefully before speaking, he whispered the same thing he said an hour ago to me. "It was my job. I had to, I had no choice! Can you just give it up? We're all fighting here, growing old and getting nowhere. I may as well jump into the ocean because I can tell it's never getting any better than this," I could tell he was telling the truth because he had a sad, sincere look on his face.
Knowing that Logan was solid as stone and wasn't going to crack, I caved in. "Fine. You can help as long as you don't do that again. I don't care about that 'it was my job' crap, because I haven't believed it for a second," technically, I lied. I did believe him. And if my suspicions were right, the vampires had something to do with the SkyBreak.
"I understand," whispered Logan solemnly, with his head down. That was obviously meant to signal the end of the conversation.
The reason that Logan sent vampires, not werewolves, is because he was a special kind of SkyBreak warrior. When the SkyBreak began, magic powers were given to people considered worthy of fighting for the humans. Logan was involved in an accident, and apparently was extremely valuable so they made him a hybrid. At the time, turning someone into a hybrid was extremely dangerous and put the recipient at high risk of being killed and ripped to shreds by the high levels of magic power. But Logan was so powerful that he could hold both, so he ended up being a Vampire-Werewolf hybrid. That also meant he could turn into a vampire and was bloodthirsty in that state. What was even more frightening, was that there was only one other hybrid. The SkyBreak demon himself. That was different, though. This demon had extremely high magic powers because he figured out how to empty vessels inside him to make room for these dangerously high levels of hybrid-transformation magic. The SkyBreak demon's hybrid was Demon-Freedom Shapeshifter.
This was the most powerful transformation magic that you could posses. Freedom shapeshifter meant that you could change your own or any other person's appearance at your own will. You would have the freedom to change someone into whatever you want. This gave the monsters an advantage because they could disguise as well-known humans. Humans eventually caught on, though, and separated everyone into groups of three, with a schedule on their arms so they would all know where everyone is. No one ever left their groups unless they were dead for certain. This is when the Skybreak demon used his Demon side of the hybrid. This turned the user into a demigod that had control over everything within a 1000 kilometre radius.Logan also went through a lot as a young child. He never understood why he had his powers because of a major concussion during the SkyBreak war. He then suffered from retrograde amnesia and had to go through a series of operations before he could even speak the English language, let alone stand up. Luckily, with the technology they had they could implant a chip with all of the necessary information he needed to know about his current situation. There was one problem: Logan had lost all of his childhood memories... including who his parents were. After the war ended, Logan had to be reintroduced to his parents while they were in hospital. Both of them had suffered major injuries as well as minor concussions. Logan's dad had his left arm ripped clean off, bone and all, while his mum lost most of her hair and 3 of her right-hand fingers. It was truly a gruesome sight for such a young boy.
Feeling some kind of sorrow for him as I recalled this information, I decided to tell him what had happened.
"As Matilda and Edward were fighting the vampires off I ran in and ripped off some of their heads!"
Remembering the scene, Edward's face lit up with a sense amazement, "That was so cool!" shouted Edward, pumping his fist in the air like a 5-year-old.
"Nothing is cool about nearly dying, Edward," Matilda snapped back, rolling her eyes.
"Well at least we lived!" Edward yelled, in her face.
"Guys, please stop. We're not getting anywhere like this. We shouldn't be fi-"
"SHUT UP LOGAN NO ONE WANTS TO HEAR WHAT YOU HAVE TO SAY! WHY ARE YOU EVEN ALIVE ANYMORE?" screamed Matilda, obviously annoyed and angry.
I noticed this was going to eventually come out of control. We couldn't let Logan -no, anyone- have any more blood on their hands. "He's going to help us now. It was his job so he had no choice in the matter. I believe it was the SkyBreak demon's doing," I said calmly, desperately trying not to slap anyone in the face.
"WHAT?!" Screamed Matilda and Edward in unison. Logan just nodded, a now blank expression on his face.
"Well, that just gives us another reason to kill him! Can I? Can I? Can I please Liv?" Edward asked with puppy-dog eyes.
By now, everyone was looking at Edward with an expression of shock and disbelief. You could tell Logan wasn't expecting that.
"WHAT? NO! And don't call me Liv, I don't know you well and I find nicknames weird. Come on, let's go before you guys kill each other," I said with an amused edge to my voice.
I wasn't a cold hearted person. I just fought for what was right.
As they nodded their heads in shame, I grinned at them and they grinned back.
"Let's go kick some demon butt!"
