Survival is Key
A/N: THIS CHAPTER IS HALF THE SIZE OF THE OTHERS AND IS BASICALLY A CONVERSATION/FILLER CHAPTER."So, I guess the first one of us is dead, then," said Logan, stretching and chuckling as if he was some sort of comedian.
For some strange reason, I let out a tiny laugh, which slowly escalated into a loud, uncontrollable fit of giggles. Matilda just let out one tiny laugh, that almost sounded fake.
"Well, he wouldn't be dead if he listened to me and didn't eat those stupid berries, so I guess we can't blame ourselves!" I shook my head, trying to clear my head, but the images of the previous night just didn't go away.
Matilda gave out a long, exasperated sigh, "Yeah."
Five hours passed, and we were hungry for lunch. Assuming the berries were the only "food" growing around our base, we all knew that lunch wouldn't be an easy task. Aside from food, we also needed water. Badly. Us three had gone at least three days without water, and we were all very close to dying. Mentally and physically.
"Hey guys, I have a wild idea," shouted Logan sarcastically as he awoke from a well-needed nap.
Looking up from drawing mindlessly in the damp dirt, I replied. "Oh yeah? Well I'm all ears."
Matilda must've overheard our conversation, because she began to climb down from the tree she was resting in, her feet getting caught on stray branches and slipping down the smooth, brown surface.
"Maybe... just maybe... we should find a lake, and drink water!" Logan suggested, rolling his eyes.
I remember thinking that he was crazy. Now I know that at that point, we all were, some more than others.
I stood up, a manic look in my eyes. "What? No! WE JUST GOT HERE!" This time, I could definitely be heard all through the forest, maybe even down at the beach.
Logan stood up too, getting all up in my face. "Fine. You wanna die of thirst? Be. My. Guest."
Sigh. I put my hands on my hips, mocking him. I then replied in a baby voice while pouting sarcastically. "Oh? Are you a wuss? Poor widdle Logan can't go three days without water. Boo-hoo.
Then I sat back down, my back facing him.
Logan pushed back his hair, as if he was totally done with my stupidity and was getting a literal headache from it. Ugh.
He then slowly walked over to Matilda, who just fell from the tree. Logan held out his hand, offering to help her up. Matilda took it gratefully, and they both walked off, in search of a lake.
"You two lovebirds have fun!" I screamed after them, "I'll just be packing up camp... by myself. Ha. Ha. Ha."
At this point the two turned around, curious about what else I would say to myself. Of course, I continued, oblivious that they were still in earshot.
"Argh, sometimes those people drive me insane..." a giggle could be heard from the trees.
"I wonder if they found a lake yet? Nah, if Logan's navigating they have a better chance of ending up in Narnia..." I paused for a second, "Ooh! Maybe Logan fell into a volcano! Not Matilda, though. She's cool."
Matilda's footsteps grew nearer, until she was crouched right beside me.
"You know, Olivia," she said, laughing, "I have a question: Did you really think I would let you pack up by yourself?"
As I picked up Matilda's bow, knife and jacket, I grumbled a few complaints along the lines of; "Argh, you humans are so annoying!"
Matilda took her stuff out of my hands, her face bright and shining, "Well, you're not too bad yourself."
At that moment, Matilda's smile could've lit up a whole city.
