(Ex) Girlfriend

NOW…

                   “Hey Jacoby…long time, no see,”

For almost two damn years, I tried to get this girl out of my head…two damn years, I was bangin out any and every pretty face that came to mind. I figured if I put enough distance between us, then I wouldn’t think about her…but here she stands- right here, and right now. Part of me wanted to touch her butter soft skin, do things to her that I never had the chance to do and can only imagine…the other part of me remembered the “Back To School” dance, and the aftermath. I tried to step left, but she stepped the same way.

                   “Oh…sorry,” she said.

“It’s cool. I’m goin home,” I said. “Whatever business you got with Max, yall can get to it,”

“I can give you a ride home. I don’t mind,” she said. I twisted my lips as my temper flared…the nerve of her! I think deep inside, she knows I still kind of…

“Yeah, I’m one of the ‘Spelman Sorority Saviors’. Our job, is to help out prime candidates that we think are prime Spelman material, and help them stay on track to be ready for college,” she said “So yes, I’m Maxine’s mentor…but I also came by, because I heard you were around. We need to talk,”

I stretched my arms open. “What do we need to talk about? I’m done…I aint got no wordz,”

“Jacoby please,” she pleaded. “Don’t leave,”

“Give me one good reason why I need to stick around? I had a great day- me and my moms got along, no arguments, and I had a wonderful dinner. Why spoil it now?” I snarled. “If you wanna help Max get into college, I have no issue with that…but I don’t have anything to say to you,”

“If you’ll just let me speak”-

“I’m goin home…Imma smoke some weed,”

                   “Jacoby, can I say someth”-

“Imma have a drink, and then I’m goin to bed,”

“Jacoby, I FUCKED UP!” she roared. I stood there in silence, as both Max and Corliss stood there in awe- specially Corliss. I can imagine that she never figured such vulgar language would come out of her mouth that way.

She lowered her head. “Don’t make me do this…I stayed away long enough because you wanted me to. Don’t keep punishin me like this…I was wrong, when I chose to be with Quint. I was wrong, when I believed a lot of things, instead of asking you. For two damn years, I tried to apologize to you, but you wouldn’t hear me out,”

“Give her a chance,” said Max. “I called her over…she wasn’t going to come until I told her that you would be here and maybe yall two could talk,”

“Look…if I needed a ‘Love Connection’, I wouldda asked mutha fuckin Chuck Woolery,” I said. “I’m doin fine on my own,”
