Howdy!

I can't do the accent but I'm an American now.

It's so funny to think back now about how dear old Demy used to ensure me that once I reach the age to welcome a man in my home I'll have lots of "gentlemen callers". Jokes on her, it never happened. I just got engaged in literally a blink of an eye. Perhaps that's the reason why I've never been successful with men. But that's another story for later. Right now, we are focusing on my first marriage.

Weddings are complicated, whoever says otherwise is a liar. My groom and I (isn't it weird to say this out loud?) got married in on a Wednesday afternoon. My hair was in a bun, had a hat on accessorised with a tiny veil and wore a leisure but still elegant chiffon dress like it was no big deal. Sam had a tailored suit on which I assume he had it made back when he studied at the uni and secured an internship. He was dashing in that deep blue three-piece suit with a herringbone pattern and champagne tie made of silk. I bet Dean made remarks when he saw him dressed like that. But who cares? It was chic, maybe even too chic for a man who wears hoodies and flannel out of sheer comfort but I didn't care to notice at that moment. I was busy being in awe.

The ceremony a.k.a. the actual wedding was less than half an hour long. The lady who tied our lives together on paper made a speech about unity and love and all that sappy stuff you'd expect, then we said our vows and that was it. Uhm... The embarrassing part was that we almost forgot about the kissing which probably would have been better for all of us. No, it was nothing cringy or complicated, just a kiss on the lips for solid 3 seconds and yes, I counted. Bobby took photos so we could put something in an album and to show it to Dean since he wasn't there in person. Sam was afraid that if he was present our cover would fall apart.

The ceremony was over and the hard part was around the corner. Pretend marriage is actually pretty similar to a real one but with a twist. Think of it as live action roleplaying only with the police being your judge and your fate depending on it. Wait, that turned dark real quick. Anyways, moving on.

It took only a few days to the people at the migration department to contact us. A lady of the age of circa 34 and her partner, a younger man came to check on us. They spent almost a whole day with Sam and me asking questions about our relationship. We gave them a story we came up with together.

As I travelled around the world thanks to my job I felt a strong passion to see the United States for myself. Sam and I met the day when I arrived. He made the first step when he saw and stopped me. I was still in my uniform at the airport which means that I'm still at work, meaning that there was no way of getting out of talking to a potential client. He asked me out for a cup of coffee. Normally I wouldn't have said yes (I'm more of a tea person and I don't date passengers) but I took fancy on him so I figured why not? I'm employed by a British airline, I wasn't working at that time and was also on leave, it seemed fine. I soon met his brother, Dean, the black sheep of the family. Him and Sam were traveling around the country, just like I intended to do so I joined them on their tour. During those weeks Sam and I got closer to each other while his relationship with his brother started going downhills. Soon Dean got in trouble with the law and we haven't seen him since the incident in Milwaukee. We tried to contact him with no success and he didn't show up at the wedding either.

Sam and I wanted Dean to be safe from any sort of governmental agents, including migration, that's why we decided to craft the story this way. If they decided to look into the photos from the wedding or interrogate the attendees the cat would haven gotten out of the bag with the speed of light.

Even though it wasn't a serious marriage I was sorry that Dean wasn't there. He gave me a present after the ceremony, a cheap guitar. The thought still makes me feel fuzzy inside.

But a matching story and a few photos is not enough to do the trick. The 2 agents separated us to tell them a bit of the personal side of the relationship without the being compromised by the other. I talked about family, how I haven't had one and how Sam is losing his own. It was first his mother who was gone, then father, John, who I haven't had the pleasure to meet and now it's Dean who's drifting apart by each day. And Sam... he's so bright and hardworking and empathic, good listener. And I don't know why he chose me out of all people.

While we were having this discussion the lady who was doing the interview dropped a bomb of knowledge on me: Sam had a long-term relationship which ended about a year ago. They didn't break up, the girl died in a house fire of unknown origin. I was shocked because he never mentioned this to me before. I kept a straight face as much as I could because I had a feeling she told me this to provoke a reaction out of me. I used the "I suffered from loss myself" card on her and it worked brilliantly. So much so that she didn't file a case. They ate it all up.

After what I've been through with this woman as my interviewer I was wondering what Sam told the other guy about me. You know about what does he find appealing in me. I asked him but never got a straight answer just like how I haven't told him that I know about Jessica.

I made some tea in the end of the day and we set on the porch of the house we rented only for the interview. It was a windy night but the warm brew in our hands certainly helped. to endure it. I wanted to enjoy the view before we leave and the touch of could couldn't hold me back in doing so. I kept thinking about Jessica but mostly about how her parting must have affected Sam. While I was silently debating with myself I looked at the man who I was married to and made him promise that one day when this was over and Yellow Eye will no longer be a treat he'll find a nice girl and he'll marry her and live like he was supposed to. He insisted not to take his word for it, but he's gonna try.
