KAT'S POV
The three of us sat around the crackling amber fire. After about ten rounds of Truth or Dare, it was back to Caylib.
Caylib pondered over what to ask after Ash replied "Truth."
Caylib's blue orbs darted around the back yard before quickly asking, "Do you and Kat have a history?"
Ash tenses beside me and I uncrossed my legs and sighed. Ash rolled his eyes in response and clenched his fist as it was my turn.
"Caylib, truth or dare," I questioned and leaned on Ash.
"Dare."
"Umm. I don't know, can I skip my turn?" I sighed.
"Sure. Ash, it's your turn," Caylib smirked.
"Skip me too," Ash shut his eyes and leaned back on his elbows.
"Fine. Ash, truth or dare," Caylib bugged.
"Dude I'm not playing."
"Hey, just do one round," I whispered in Ash's ear.
"Fine. Truth," Ash spat.
Caylib pouted slightly before a grin grew across his face.
"Have you and Kat ever dated or kissed?"
Ash and I looked at each other.
We have never really talked about our relationship. It was one of those life long friendships and just over the years we never really said how we felt. We just understood what we had. I have a rough background and Ash knew that from day one. He had been in the same boat. Ash had lost his mother in a car wreck use to his fathers drunk driving when he was five. His father survived, however, Ash was forced to go live with his grandparents in the same neighborhood as me. About a week after he moved in two blocks away, he came walking with his grandpa to meet my family. As his grandpa walked inside to talk to my sober mother, Ash found me sobbing out by the bushes.
He asked me what was wrong and he will never forget what I did.
I leaned over and whispered, "I'm Kathryn. My mommy keeps yelling at everyone and it makes me sad. Know why? 'cause I think my dad is gone for good. He just walked out with a bag as you rounded the corner. It's my fault. I made my mommy mad when I didn't clean my room." My innocent voice wavered.
Ash looked into my moist eyes and hugged me.
He pulled away and replied, "I'm Ash. My mom died two months ago. I'm just moving in and need a friend, too."
As most five year olds, once it was said, we were best friends.
"Hello??" Caylib snapped his fingers and I drug my eyes away from Ash's.
"Are y'all still playing?" Caylib asked he evaluated Ash.
I was pretty good at reading people considering I never talked to them, I chose to study them. Study the way they walked, studied the way the talked around friends and strangers, I watched the girls confront their crushes, the way guys watch girls. I watched it all. Every day at lunch I sat by myself and drank it all in.
I could tell. Caylib didn't like Ash. And Ash wasn't too fond of Caylib either.
"Nope, no history," Ash said plainly.
"Alright, then I have a dare," Caylib declared.
"Let's hear it," I smiled.
"Ash, I dare you to kiss Kat."
"Listen here, jack a$$," Ash growled and stood up.
"Oh, are you standing up for your little girlfriend?" Caylib smirked, standing also.
"Alright. I'll kiss him," I agreed to throw off Caylib's dumb plan.
Caylib looked shock and a look of regret briefly crossed his face.
"Wait, what?" Ash questioned and turned away from Caylib.
"You heard me."
I stood and wrapped my arms around his neck.
"Let's do this," I said.
He leaned in closer and I began to wonder if I was really about to kiss my best friend.
