I'm at the library; sitting at the desk. The door opens and I see Luke.
"Grandma, where are you?" Luke ask.
"I'm up here!" Ms. Reed yells.
He doesn't even notice me as he climbs the stairs. I hear them talking then I hear hushed whispers.
"How is she?"
"Not good"
Who are they talking about? What's going on? Luke walks back downstairs and looks at me.
"Muffin do you know who that car belongs too?"
"No, am I suppose to?" I squeak
"Well if you know can you tell me because I have a bone to pick with them."
"I have no clue?"
He leaves the bell dinging behind him. I stay for a while, but then I leave. I start walking toward the school, trying to get my car. It quickly becomes dark. I pull my sweater a little closer to my body.
Bakersfield isn't a bad town, but it's not safe. Yes there are people who do drugs, and yes there are bad people. It's quaint when it's daytime, but it's scary at night. I'm walking when I hear some footsteps behind me. I look behind me when I see a man maybe 39. He has a toothy grin.
"What's a pretty little thang like you doing in the dark?"
I don't answer and start running as fast as I can. I make it home, and hit my bed instantly falling asleep.
