Ice. That was all that stood between me and Asher but I had no clue how it got there. One minute I had a clear shot then there was a solid wall of ice standing in my way. Ace was no where around and even if he was, he wasn't an ice wielder. Ace controlled metal, not iron though, hence the green and gray color theme in his shifts.
I snarled. Who cared? I could get through that wall, the little cheater. I shot a wall of flame to meet it but it just disappeared into thin air as steam again. I hit the wall again and something caught my eye. I could've sworn I saw a pulse of light every time I hit the wall. I tried again and again until I finally pinpointed the location of the pulsing. When I saw what it was I froze. Nothing could have prepared me for what I saw.
Asher was cocking his head at me through the wall, completely oblivious to the icy wings that had shattered into existence along his back.
You-you're a star. I meant to say it out loud but I was so shocked I couldn't speak. The reaction on his face was instant. His eyes widened in horror and my own fears were confirmed. He had heard my voice in his head. The ice, the wings. I could feel him. That's when he passed out.
. . . . .
Asher, Ace and I had all been moved from our original rooms to a set of three joined rooms with Asher in the middle one and Ace and I on either side. Once Asher was down I got through the wall with ease and linked Ace to come quick and bring the leaders of the clan. I had needed to talk to them. I acted completely calm but Ace could sense my panic.
Asher was a star. An ice wielder with considerable power if he could stand his ground against my own vast well of fire. And the fact that he was a vampire on top of it, it was unthinkable.
My own power had returned, thankfully, but I was confused. First off, how was it suppressed and second, what brought it back? I had the same question for Asher's powers but I wasn't sure anyone knew the answer. For now, I pondered the information I had been given.
When the clan leaders had arrived, Asher's wings were still out but melted away when mine got close. They were just as shocked as I was. Ace himself was speechless. Nobody had known, not even Asher. They moved us to the joined rooms so we could watch over him but I was pulled into a separate room by one of the elders. She was the one that told me Asher's history.
The Bloodnight clan had found him in an abandoned alleyway near their territory. They assumed he was eight years old but he couldn't remember anything. He didn't know who he was, who his family was, if he even had one, where he was from. He was homeless. The clan took him in, didn't let them see the supernatural side of them should someone come for him and he told them everything. After a year it was clear that no one was even looking for him. That's when they accepted him into the clan and showed him what they really were. He chose to take the Blood Rite two years later, becoming a vampire. He had become a critical member of the clan ever since. There had never been any sign that he had been anything more than human. No hint of powers, no hint of anything strange with the little eight year old boy they had picked off the streets. He might have had a similar transformation to mine but they weren't sure. The Blood Rite caused them to go out into the wilderness with a clan leader, they would drink the leader's blood and the clan leader would leave them there to see if they had the strength it took to be a vampire and get back. The trip normally took a few days so it wasn't odd that Asher had taken so long. Nobody had seen him transform and to think about it, nobody had ever checked to see if he was dead either. Seeing him with fangs had been enough.
I couldn't figure it out, how was that possible, especially if he was a star? We have flawless memories but Asher seemed to have amnesia or something. And how was it possible that he still didn't have powers even if he wasn't a vampire yet? Ugh. My brain hurt.
I walked into Asher's room and sat down onto the bed next to him. I put my hand on his forehead and checked his temperature. A bit colder than normal but that was expected of an ice wielder. I was checking his vitals with my hand still on his forehead when a shock like lightning shot up through my fingertips into my arm. I yelped and hopped off the bed, backing up slightly. I rubbed my arm and turned to glare at Asher only to find him glaring back.
