The Creature

The screens flashed red. A deep roaring sound shook the hallways. The lights had shut off and staff were running all across the room, panicked and afraid.

"We need to stabilize the fabricated environmental controls!" one shouted.

"If we don't purge the system, we could fracture space-time!" another shouted.

The panicked cries and yelling of the people was overwhelming. One of the staff took off running down a hallway, it was poorly lit and the floor was covered with water. His feet slid across as he tried to come to a halt. After regaining his balance, he burst into a room; the room had several large monitors, all were flashing a 'warning' signal. He reached below a desk in the corner and pulled on a lever, a panel popped open underneath the monitors.

He scrambled to his feet and quickly slammed his finger onto a button. A loud echo sounded throughout the facility.

"Attention all personal! Please prepare for a complete system purge! This is not a drill, prepare for a complete system purge!"

He looked into the panel that had opened and pulled on a small green lever. The alarm cut out and the red flashing lights turned off. The whole facility went into darkness.

He was suddenly hit with the realization, all the power had just been cut, all security and communications were down. The facility vulnerable.

Sweat ran down his face. Echoed screams filled the hallways. Terrified yells and calls for help could be heard. He looked out the door, just at the end of the hallway, he could see several dark figures running past the elevator. They were chased by three creatures running on all fours.

He ran in the opposite direction until he reached a wall. Looking to the left he saw a door labeled 'Service' and to his right, a door labeled 'Exits'. Quickly, he opened the 'Exits' door and entered a large room with three circular structures.

"Shit."

A subtle clicking noise echoed in the room. He froze.

The lights snapped on. In front of him, about seven meters away, was a tall slender creature, nearly eight feet in height. It had a round head, its neck, arms, and legs were very thin. It stood perfectly still, the large glowing eyes stared at him.

It clicked again. The noise echoed in the room.

"Look over there!" he shouted as he pointed to the corner.

The creature took a step closer. It did not break eye contact, it did not seem to even have eyelids, only large pure white glowing eyes.

It lunged at him. Its claw-like hands reached out and grasped at his clothes. He tried to fight back, but it was too powerful. The creature plunged its hands into his stomach ripping his insides out. He screamed out in pain. It wrapped its hand around his head and twisted it. There was a loud crack and he went silent.

Slowly, it stood up. The circular structures in the room sprang to life, gateways. A blue haze appeared until it filled the gateway.

The creature crawled into it.

A voice came over the loud speaker. "Attention. The system purge has been complete! Please proceed through the halls with caution. The power-outage caused some of the specimen to escape. There have already been twenty-three reported casualties. I recommend staying at your stations or locked in your rooms until all of the specimen are accounted for."
