The set over the horizon casting a beautiful orange-purple ray across the sky. The moon rolled into the sky and with it, the stars, twinkling as much as they could.
In an alley of the quiet town, a light-blue whirling gate appeared. A dozen people streamed out of the gate and into the alley. All were bruised and battered, two of them had scorch marks across their arms.
A woman stood up, she had on an official uniform signifying that she was the one in charge.
"Can I have a attention you for a minute!" she yelled. Voices settled and the group became quiet. "As you know, we had to go through an emergency evacuation. Dozens of emergency gates were opened and the staff was evacuated before the environmental controls failed. As the commanding officer of the manual force labor in section three, I have to go back and make sure that functions are returned to their original state."
"We don't even know where we are." one of the burnt asked.
"Right now, I don't have answers for you."
She walked through the gateway. It closed after she stepped through. People looked around for answers.
"What the fuck do we do now?" one asked.
"I think we should figure out where we are first of all."
The group slowly shuffled out of the alley and into the street. It was empty, the whole block had its lights off. They walked by each store and shop, the lights were all off, not a single indication of human life.
"Where are we?"
"I don't know. It has some indications that people were here. I mean, look at this town. You don't think this could've just popped up out of the blue!"
"Well, why not? This is a multiverse. Realities layered on top of one another, like boxes stacked perfectly together. It could've just existed for all we know."
"I ain't buying any of that bullshit. There's only one me. I'm the only one out there!" one of the women yelled out.
There was a loud smash. The whole group spun around. A young woman, about seventeen years old, lay on the floor in front of the pizzeria with glass shards all around her. She slowly got up, her left arm was cut and a grocery bag lay on the floor. Several oranges, a carton of milk, and a wallet rolled out of the bag.
A large vertical crack was behind the broken window, it had blue-ish green swirls around it. Through it, a dirty bathroom stall could be seen. The group looked at her, perplexed.
She looked frantically at the group.
"W-what are you..." she stuttered.
The opening collapsed, the thin outline hung in the air for a second before disappearing. She stretched her hand out, palm open. The group screamed as a large crack opened beneath them.
They fell in and the crack sealed.
"How?" she asked herself.
