Papers, shards of broken vases and pieces of furniture littered the floor.  There were tears in the cream wallpaper and the intricate, elegant mirror that sat above the fire place was smashed.  Wine stained the carvings along the sides of the fireplace and the broken golden candelabras reflected the red flames of the burning fire as it lay toppled across the ruined table, our food was spread across the room, covering the walls.

It was dark out, the stars sparkling in the sky, visible through the wall length window framed by pearl white velvet curtains.  Soft classical music drifted through the room.  My feet crunched on pieces of broken glass from the wine glasses we had been using.  I had cuts and bruises on me from her abuse.  My clothes and hair were mussed.  She appeared the same, though she didn't have as many cuts and bruises as me.  I had avoided hitting her as much as possible, only doing so to defend myself.

It was our anniversary.  Two years together.  I couldn't believe this was how it was ending.  Annie had been acting weird these couple of days, ever since we had that fight a week ago.  I definitely had not expected this when I came home from work.

"You can't escape me Jonathan," Annie said calmly as she walked towards me.  She sounded calm although she was trembling with rage.  Far out, she was crazy!  Absolutely insane!

"You know I love you. You have to stay!" tears sprang up in her eyes and began to spill down her cheeks.

Manipulation.

She twitched, her entire body rocking with the force of it.  I stepped back, tripping on the wooden leg of the chair she had thrown.

"What are you?"

"What am I? WHAT AM I?" she threw her head back and the most sadistic, otherworldly laugh I had ever heard erupted from her, "Why dear Jonny, I am your girlfriend. I own you, you belong to me!" Her voice became shrill.

I looked around the room, desperate for an escape, a phone, anything that would help me.  I continued to move backwards, wanting to be as far away from her as possible.  Annie merely continued to move towards me, until I was pressed up against the wall.

That was a mistake.

I looked from side to side, "Why are you doing this?" I asked, attempting to buy myself some time. I needed a plan.

"I love you and want to be with you forever!" she threw her hands down and stomped her foot like a child, "And there is only one way to do that."

She pulled a knife out of the mahogany side draw behind her.  My vision blurred, I swayed to the side and the room spun, she must have put something in my drink.  I thought it tasted strange.

"Ah, yes. My bipolar medication must be kicking in."

Bipolar? Wait...

My eyes widened in realisation, "You have bipolar?"

I swayed again, leaning against the wall for support.

"Well one would think that, the doctors certainly did. But no, sweetheart, I do not." Another sadistic grin crawled its way onto her features.
