The world was rocking, moving, tossing me from side to side. Distant voices echoed in my mind.
The consistent beep beep beep pulsed through my head as I rocked. It felt like I was lost in some dark abyss, the sound of people there although I could not find them. Then, through the inky darkness of my unconsciousness, there was light, tinged red. I felt my eyelashes tickle my cheeks as my eyelids fluttered. I let out what I thought would be a long groan but turned out to be a slight hitched whimper, my head was pounding. I tried to move an arm, a leg, my head.
Nothing happened.
I tried to open my eyes but they were glued shut. I couldn't move anything but my eye balls, and something was forcing air into my lungs, it hurt. When I tried to speak all that came out were huffs of air and whimpers.
How embarrassing.
"He's conscious," said an unfamiliar male voice, he sounded relieved.
I felt cold dry hands on my clammy heated face as fingers pried open my left eye, a bright light shone into it. I knew I would have flinched back had I been able to move, but all I could do was try and move my retina away from the light.
"Stay with me now. You're going to be okay,' the man assured, his warm breath rushed into my face, smelling of egg.
Gross.
Someone get this guy a mint.
Damn.
"This is for the headache," I heard him say, his voice warbled and deep.
I felt the prick of a needle in my arm and the burn of something being injected. The man let go of my face and the intense light stopped burning through my retina. I wish I had gotten a glimpse of where I was but my eye snapped shut before I could. There was a violent bump and I fell back into silent, swimming darkness.
I could hear rustling. Someone whistling. The sound of clanking and a moving vehicle resonated through my body, both loud a quiet at the same time, warbled, as if I were submerged in water. Where was I? My limbs, my entire body, was made of led. I tried to move, commanding my limbs to move, all I got was my left index finger and a big toe. I curled my finger over and over, relishing the movement.
Suddenly, the vehicle halted, my body rocked violently one more time before everything went still. The sound of a door clanking open echoed in my ears, making my head pound. I curled my finger again, where was I? I tried to open my eyes.
Nothing.
Where the hell was I? There was a man talking, a deep warbled sound. Was he talking to me? What was happening? Panic surged through me. Was I safe? Who are these people? My body jolted, or the thing my body was on did. I was being pulled backwards, or, up?
I continued to move my finger, curling and wriggling it obsessively. There was an abrupt bump and my head pounded and swirls of red and white flashed behind my eyes. On the second bump the world went quiet.
I dreamt of a woman. Of blonde hair and deep, sparkling, brown eyes. Long thick lashes and thin pink lips. A beauty spot above a lip and a beautiful sweet smile. Then it changed. So suddenly I hardly processed it until the enraged war cry erupted from those once smiling lips, now set into a horrific snarl. I tried to move as she barrelled down the blood-stained hall towards me.
I tried to slam the door.
I couldn't move.
I thrashed in my mind.
I screamed.
Nothing.
Not a sound escaped my lips, not even a huff of air.
No limb twitched no nerve felt.
Nothing.
She kept coming.
Closer.
Closer.
I heard someone screaming, distant and warbled yet close, as if right near my ears. Crashing and shouts. Annieth crashed into me, pinning me down. Her perfect features set into that hideous snarl and her elegant long fingers wrapped around the handle of a horrific knife.
I didn't see the point of pinning me down, it's not like I could move anyway.
There was blood already covering the walls and floor, I didn't know where it had come from, it was as if the house was bleeding. I didn't have time to wonder as Annie raised the knife above her head, screaming as she slammed it down towards my chest. I didn't have time to scream, didn't have time to take a breath before everything went black.
And then....
Light?
Was I dead? Is this what it felt like? I thought your life was meant to flash before your eyes or something.
My eyes opened a crack and I stared up at a white roof.
What.
The.
Hell.
