I just wanted to leave this here...
The door of her hospital room creaked open. Aylie quickly hid the letters below her bed as they had been for a few days now. The silhouette of a boy appeared, "Aylie?"
Suddenly, her vision cleared up and Rowan's frame was there. "Rowan? What are you doing up at this hour?"
Rowan chuckled as he got closer to the bed. "I could say the same to you." He sighed and ran his fingers through his hair, messing up his quiff. "I came here because I couldn't sleep." He said after a few moments.
"Why?" Aylie asked softly but weakly. She worried how her condition affected Rowan.
"The nightmares keep me up. I can't sleep knowing that you're here suffering."
It was a crazy idea, and she didn't even know if it would work or if he would like it. "Hey, it's okay. I'm here, I'm not going anywhere. If you want, you can sleep beside me. I mean, the bed is kind of cold and is large enough for both of us." She smiled sheepishly, fiddling with her fingers.
"Sure." Rowan lied beside her. Both were facing each other, eyes to eyes. "I'm sorry." She started, but it turned into an emotional fit she couldn't control, repeating I'm sorry until her eyes shed tears. "I'm dying, Rowan. I can't follow my dreams, I can't finish high school, I can't go to college. I can't even tell yo-" she didn't finish her sentence because she was crying hard.
Through her blurry vision, she couldn't see what was happening, she could only feel his lips on top of hers as he wiped the tears away. "Don't ever say those. I can't live without you, Aylie. I love you."
She laughed nervously, "Of course you do, I'm your Best friend."
"No, no. Aylie, I do love you, not just because your my best friend but also because I fell in love with you. And this disease is driving me mad. I can't live without you by my side." Tears started to cascade from his eyes and no sooner did she join him.
"Rowan," she cupped his face and looked at him in the eyes, "so do I." She didn't know why she felt brave at the time but she kissed him. And it was the best hospital kiss she ever had.
