The next day went horribly slowly. All Simon could think about was why Dallas had been so soft with him. Normally she was filled with adventure, but yesterday she'd seemed down and low. Not just in the way she spoke to him, but in the way her face held barely any expression. Like a corpse, she was cold.

Not only was she cold, she was distant, but Simon hoped things would be different when he went to see her after his training session today.

When he'd told the guys he was going to see her, they all laughed.

"Bet you're gonna get lucky again!" JJ joked, punching him lightly on the shoulder.

"I think she wants to talk to me about something," Simon said with a shrug, trying not to act so worried about her around them.

"Oh God," Cal exclaimed, sliding his hand down his face. "You're practically dating one of the hottest girls in school and you're going to her house to talk about your feelings instead of getting laid? Give me a break, Simon. You don't deserve this sudden luck with the ladies!"

"Hey, I've always been good with girls!" Simon defended.

"Remember that time you tried to chat up Jaya and she threw her drink on you because you accidentally insulted her?" Vikk contributed, earning a glare from Simon.

"Or remember the time you almost got with that red haired girl at that party a few months ago, but then you, in your drunk state, told her that her skin was pretty and creeped her out?" Josh added with a laugh following it.

"Alright, I get it, I'm not that great with girls, but I'm good with Dallas."

"If you say so, bro," Cal said, clapping his hand onto his shoulder. "If you say so."

-

"I'll see you guys later," Simon tells them, swinging his bag over his shoulder. Josh looks up from tying up his shoes.

"Where're you going?" He asks with a frown, but his brain soon clicks onto where Simon was going before he even replied.

"To see Dallas and see if she's ok after... you know... everything," Simon says, running his hand along his jaw and feeling the beginnings of stubble.

"Alright, man. See you tomorrow, yeah?" Josh smiles, hoping that Simon got what he was after with Dallas because he was sceptical about whether or not she was going to give it to him. He didn't trust her and never had done. There was always something about her that was guarded and he wasn't all that sure that Simon was capable of unlocking what was hidden behind her front.

That was the risk with Dallas Edlen. She was a rocky road, a dangerous path and one that Simon was lost down. Even Josh could see that Simon was not coming back from that easily.

"Yeah," Simon says, turning and leaving the changing rooms.

-

Simon walked from the school to Dallas' home. Her house was a large one, the largest one on the street. It sat on the end of the street, looking out as if observing all those around them. It was painted white with stone stairs leading up to the large, oak front door.

Simon shifted his bag on his shoulder as he made his way up the stairs, inhaling as he stepped up to the door.

Exhaling, he lifts his knuckles to the door and knocks confidently, his knuckles rapping against the sturdy wood.

And then he stood in waiting for her to open the door with her dappled brown eyes and her beautiful smile that he could never get out of his mind. Young in love, is what his mum described him as when he'd admitted to her that what him and Dallas had was more than the friendship he'd claimed it to be for so long. She'd also claimed to have had suspicions, but didn't want to say anything. When she'd asked how it was going, Simon couldn't help but grin like an idiot and describe it as good. It made his mum smile too. She liked Dallas.

When the door opens, Simon's grin fades as he comes face to face with someone who isn't Dallas. It's a woman with the same brown eyes, but they were duller, less vibrant and she wore a cream coloured dressing gown, matched with a pair of fluffy slippers. In her youth, she would have been a woman of immense beauty. Perhaps more alike to Dallas than either of them would care to admit in the way she carried herself.

She looked down at Simon, leaning on the door. "Yes, what is it? I don't want to buy anything," She slurs, her red painted lips snarling. The bags under her eyes and the stench of alcohol on her breath lead Simon to the conclusion that this was Dallas' mum.

"I'm not selling anything," He says, jaw clenched at the sight of the woman who'd caused Dallas so much unnecessary, avoidable pain. "I'm here to see Dallas."

Dallas' mum laughs bitterly, her head rocking back just like Dallas' always did. "She's not here, kid," She tells him.

"Will she be back soon?"

"God knows," She says carelessly, infuriating Simon with her disinterest in her own daughter.

"Where's she gone?"

"She's gone to LA and hopefully she never comes back. She's a disgrace, but she's her father's problem now." She hiccups, her shoulders shaking. "Look, I have important stuff to do. Go home, she doesn't live here anymore."

"Oh, ok," Simon breathes out, not quite believing what she was saying. She slams the door and he turns away, walking slowly down the stairs trying to process everything.

Dallas was gone and she'd never even said goodbye.

-

It wasn't until he got home that he realised that she had said goodbye, but not as explicitly as he would have liked her to because it meant he never got to say it back. To hold her one last time, to tell her she meant the world and to kiss her like she deserved to be kissed.

She'd said goodbye the last time he's seen her. He'd wondered why she kissed him so sweet and simply, but only now did it make sense. He wished he'd savoured it or been bolder to pursue it, to change it into a deeper meaning, but now his chance was gone and so was she.

And Dallas Edlen still was not ok.

END OF BOOK ONE

1029 words
that's it and im sad now, but there's a sequel so...
the sequel will be posted but chapters won't start being published for a while. I hope you understand, but it needs some planning. Hopefully by the time I have a basic plan Flawed With Benefits will be finished and Ribs will be in full swing.

I hope you enjoyed this as much as I did. It was such a blast to write and honestly Dallas is one of my favourite character's I've ever written, but I say that about every character I write so what does that say about me?

stay tuned for the epilogue

thanks for reading,
love, lau x
