Cole and I were having a relaxing weekend. After finding out that Owen was following me and might be dangerous, I'd been super stressed out. Cole was too so he thought we could use a quiet weekend. His mom was more than happy to come get the kids. We didn't tell her about what was going on but she was just happy that she got time to spend time with her grandkids. We actually hadn't told anyone else about what was happening. We didn't want anyone to freak out. We were worrying enough for them as well as ourselves.
"Hey, baby. Did you pick a movie yet?" Cole asked while he came in with popcorn and water for me and a beer for himself.
I thanked him and took the popcorn then placed the water on the table next to me. "Nah, there's nothing good. I found this new series though. It's supposed to be drama but I've heard that it's pretty funny too. What do you think?"
"Yeah, why not?" He sat down and got comfortable next to me. I got comfortable too by leaning into his side and pulling my feet up onto the couch. Cole barely got through half an episode before falling asleep. I was dozing off too but was able to watch the whole first episode and start the second. I set the remote down and thought I heard something so I looked around the room. I didn't see anything or hear anything again so I laid my head back down. It was the middle of the day so I probably just heard a car down at the road or something.
I fell asleep on Cole and woke back up when the next episode ended and the TV went silent. I reached for the remote when I heard something again. This time it sounded like it came from inside the house. I looked around again and woke Cole with my movements. "Sorry." I apologized for waking him.
"That's okay. I didn't realize how tired I was. How many episodes have you watched already?"
"A couple. I feel asleep too though." I said as I continued looking around.
"You looking for something?"
"No, I thought I heard something. But, I must just be hearing things." I gave a small smile and placed my hand on his chest, hoping he wouldn't get up and make a big deal of it. I was nervous but I knew if he thought a lot into it, I would become even more nervous.
"Are you sure it wasn't a real noise?" As soon as the words came out of his mouth, we heard our back screen door shut hard. Cole flung up from the couch and cautiously ran out of the room toward the noise.
I got up and ran up behind him. I grabbed his arm and pulled to stop him from going into the next room. "Cole! What are you doing?" I half-shouted.
"Go back in the living room Bridgette. I'm just going to see why the back door slammed like that." He shook his arm, which made me take my hand off of it, then did a shooing motion so I'd go back in the living room like he asked me to.
"But, Cole--"
"I'll be right back. It was probably the wind. The door might not have been secured." He played it off like he wasn't worried but I knew he was.
"If you really thought it was just the wind, you wouldn't be telling me to stay here." I tried reaching for his arm again but he pulled away to quickly.
"Just do it. I'm telling you, I'll be right back." He words were direct and more like an order so I backed up and turned. But as soon as I knew he started walking toward the back door, I turned back around and followed him. Partly because I was curious as to what the noise was, partly because I didn't want to stay in a room alone, and mostly because I wanted to make sure that Cole was going to be okay if it wasn't just the wind.
I stayed around the corner so Cole wouldn't know I followed him. I used the mirror hanging in the next room to be able to see the back door when Cole walked up to it. He had to unlock the inside door to see the screen door which as a good sign. To me, that meant that nobody could of messed with the door because it looked fine and was locked. I saw Cole tug on the screen door and heard it pop into place then saw him lock it. It was horrible that we had to be paranoid like were we but I was glad that it must have been the wind that grabbed it then slammed it back closed.
