"To Protect and Serve"
My focus should have been on more important matters. In four days, the new moon would rise. And my family will be in danger. I shouldn't be chasing a newborn through the forests and mountain ridges. I should be home, with my family, preparing for the moment that would come whether I wanted it to or not.
But he is my family. Not only do we share a loved one, but we now share an affliction. Being a vampire aside, we both shared a hatred for what we had become. It took me nearly a century to come to terms with who I was, and to adjust my life to one that satisfied me. I couldn't very well allow him to suffer.
In fact, I was looking out for my family. This chase was important, as important as the rapidly approaching war. Come hell or high water, I had to bring him home.
