Chapter 3

1 ½ year later:

It’s been almost over a year now ever since I’ve moved in with my brother. Which means I’m almost 17, and in my junior year of high school. Mike’s changed a lot! My so called innocent brother has now dated almost half the college girls, and is now the most known guy in the whole university. Barry University! Mike had decided to come all the way from South New Jersey to Miami Shores to study. He’d said he didn’t want me or him to be anywhere near Dad or our step mother or step siblings. And I’m actually happy! All those years of my dad’s hatred and my step mom’s abusing, I was actually happy to be away from them. I still remember the day when I was first beaten from the witch. Mike wasn’t home, he’d gone to get some food for us, since dad was working late and the witch had refused to make us anything.

I was sitting in my room, reading a book I got from the school library, Vampire Kisses by Ellen Schreiber, when the witch barged in. She was drunk.

“Why aren’t you doing your chores?” she slurred in an angry voice.

I put down the book and stood up. “I-I finished them,” I replied.

“Hell, you finished them! You didn’t do the toilet in my room!”

“I-they’re dirty! It’s like someone puked in them!”

“Oh fuck you, bitch!” she came towards me and tripped over the leg on the chair that sat near my bed. The glass bottle she was holding hit the wall and broke into pieces. She got up and walked over to me all wobbling, with her fists clenched. I slid back in the bed, getting away from her reach. But she was too quick.

“AHHH!” I screamed as she slapped me. Tears rolled down my eyes.

She laughed. “That’s what you get bitch! Now get up!” she grabbed me by my hair and took me to her bedroom, into the bathroom. It stank. “Clean it up!” she threw me towards the toilet. I whimpered. “I said CLEAN IT UP!”

I shake my head. And that’s when it happens. She walks into the room and grabs a belt. She walks into the bathroom and starts hitting me with it. I yell, scream for help, but no one comes. As soon as she stops I struggle to get up and run towards my room. This time, it’s not a belt that hits me; it’s something breakable; it’s glass. It hits the back of my head and I start bleeding.

Once she’s satisfied with what she’s done, she walks away into her room and closes the door. I sit there, crying and trying my best to stop the blood, but it doesn’t. When mike comes home, he runs straight upstairs, hearing my whimpering cries and looks at my bleeding head.

“Marie! What happened?” Mike asks, anxiously.

My response is a cry for help. He picks me up and rushes me towards his car, to get to the hospital. I’d gotten more than 10 stitches on my head. We’d told the doctor I’d fallen down the stairs. They took it. After that the witch hit me whenever she was drunk. Only when Mike was around, she wouldn’t, and I knew why.

I didn’t know I’d started crying until Mike had walked into the room and was kneeling in front of me, “What’s wrong?” he asked wiping away my tears.

“Nothin’!” I reply, wiping the rest of my tears. “Don’t you got a hot date with whats-her-name?”

“Cindy? Yeah, in an hour. But you alright?”

I nod. “You want something to eat?” I ask getting up.

“PB&J?” he asked as I laughed.

“You’ll never grow up, will you?”

“Not with you here! Your foods’ just soooo tasty!” I laugh. “So aren’t you going out tonight,” he asks.

I nod. “Jason’s picking me up at 8.”

Hold it right there! Now I know what you’re thinking! Me having a boyfriend? Well yeah! There’s also a story behind that one too. Man a lot of stuff happens in a year! So the story behind the boyfriend thing. When I first moved here with Mike, it was like going to high school. I got the same stares, the same mocking. But I didn’t mind, like always I was used to it. Unfortunately Mike did. He threatened to beat the crap out of everyone who laughed at me, even when I tried to stop him. But it didn’t work. So I stayed inside all the time, and only went out when Mike wasn’t around.

But the first time when Mike brought home a girl, AKA Girlfriend, she was the nicest of them all. I loved her! Most of his friends (guys) made fun of me but she didn’t treat me different or give me nasty looks, she was very nice. Her name was Casey. She had dirty blond hair and had a perfect model figure.

We used to hang out a lot, she treated me like her little sister. But one day when she saw me crying, she thought it was ‘cause of my looks. But it wasn’t; I missed Chris. But I didn’t tell her that. So when Mike left for work, she came over and told me to get ready; she said that she had a surprise for me. But when she took me to a beauty salon, I was shocked.

“Their gona give you a makeover!” she said excitedly. I just nod and go sit down. It wouldn’t hurt to make her happy, I really didn’t care that I was ugly. So after 2 whole hours of makeup, cutting, and other beauty-thingies, they finally showed me the mirror.

I looked at it and gasped, “W-what? Who is this?”

   “You silly!” Casey giggled.

“I look beautiful!” and it was true! The girl who stared back at me had changed her ugly black, frizzy hair to beautiful curly brown hair. Her boring green eyes were now beautiful hazel-blue eyes. She wore no glasses. Her ears were pierced and she wore big hooped earrings. Her makeup less pale skin was turned into tanned, full of makeup and lip gloss shown on her lips. Her bitten nails were full and done, with a French manicure. They’d also done a pedicure! Her face formed into a smile. NO BRACES!

“Come on!” Casey said, pulling my arm. “Let’s show everyone the new you!” she pulled my arm and we walked out. Everyone turned to look at me, correction……….all the boys looked at me! “Let’s go shopping! You need new clothes with your new style!”

So we went to the mall and shopped for clothes. After 2 hours we finished our shopping and were coming out the store, when I bumped into someone. It was a guy…..mistake again, a very cute guy! I giggled as he helped me up.

“Oh! I’m so sorry! I didn’t see you there! Are you alright?” he asked.

   I nodded. “Are you alright?”

He looked surprised. He stuck out a hand, “Hi, I’m Jason.”

I take his hand and shake it. “Marie.”

“Ahhh! A beautiful name for a beautiful lady!” he kisses my hand. I blush.

After that we exchange our numbers and we end up dating. But that’s not all! You should’ve seen Mike’s face when Casey showed him the surprise she was talking about.

“Marie? Oh GOD! You look beautiful!” and he rushes over to me for a hug. “Sorry to say,” Mike says looking towards Casey, “But I would totally date Marie, if I wasn’t dating you!” and they both crack up as I make a disgusted face.

“No sorry taken, I’d do the same if I was a boy!”

But something really bad happened after that! Casey moved away! Without telling anyone! She said that she knew we wouldn’t let her go if she’d told us; which was true. Then a few weeks later we got a call saying Casey died of cancer. Mike didn’t date for months until he finally got over it and met Cindy. She was okay I guess. But she wasn’t like Casey! I still miss her. I really do!
