"Everyone report to the dining hall in 30 minutes for breakfast!" I heard three hours later from the loudspeaker in the hall outside my room. I groggily got up and threw on a t-shirt, jeans, and laced up my combat boots. I walked out into the hall ready to go to the dining hall but realized I had no idea where anything was. I walked to Ben's room and knocked on the door.
"Come in! Door is unlocked!" I heard him yell from in the room. I walked in and he was sitting on his bed looking down at a laptop, his hair ruffled and unkempt and still in the clothes I saw him in earlier that morning, "Oh hey Elizabeth. Watcha' need?"
"Well I was going to head to breakfast but didn't know where to go"
"I was just finishing up," he said closing the laptop,"I'll walk with you there" We walked out into the hall and started towards the dining hall.
"So I have a question"
"Mhm?"
"Why were you up and training at three in the morning?"
"I'm an insomniac. No matter how hard I try I can only sleep for a few hours a night if I'm lucky. I usually train or do something useful before breakfast. Some other kids have it too. Some from traumatic experiences out in the field, others just a condition they've had all their life, like me."
"Okay. So how do you have enough energy to train?"
"My secret to that Elizabeth is coffee. There's this great little cafe down the boardwalk that I go to every morning after breakfast. I'll take you if you want. We'll be back in time for your lessons."
"Sure, I'd be happy to go with you and try some coffee."
"Wait. You've never had coffee before?" he asked in bewilderment.
"Nope."
"Wow. They have this great french roast that I get all the time. I think you'd love it."
"Okay, whatever you think I would like Ben," We were so absorbed in our conversation I didn't even realize we were at the dining hall. I grabbed some food with Ben and started looking around for Ethan. I spotted him at a table by the door looking a lot more together than I did. Ben and I placed our plates down next to Ethan.
"Hey bro. How are you doing?"
"Okay I guess," he responded somewhat sullenly.
"What's wrong Ethan?" Ben asked, noticing Ethan's sullen demeanor.
"I always feel this tingling in my fingertips and I'm afraid that whatever I do I'll hurt someone. Right after I was injected Liz tried to help me up but I did something that blasted her back. Luckily bushes cushioned her or it could have been a lot more serious."
"Well from what you're describing it sounds like you can manipulate electricity. Of course Arthur still has to see what you can do. Some are a little harder t identify than others."
"Is there any way to know what powers you're going to get before you're injected with the gemstiten?" I asked.
"There is no way to know for certain but we can take an educated guess based on your ancestors. For example, I come from a long line of elementists so it was assumed I would be one, but I turned out to be a healer."
"Well, we don't know anything about our ancestors. Heck, we didn't know ay of this existed until the last twenty-four hours or so."
"Well after coffee we can take a look at the Records to see if we can trace you guys back to anyone. Sound good?"
