I was mesmerized by the pure white wolf that had entered the battle in such a spectacular and dramatic fashion. Its hackles are raised along its back and its teeth are bared, but the white of its fur is what I am drawn too, the colour of fresh snow that shines in the sun just as brightly. Wolves all over the field had stopped what they were doing and seemed to just stare at it, it was quite a large wolf and for a moment I thought that maybe they had another Alpha of another pack hidden away in the house as a secret weapon, Alpha Hastings maybe.
The wolf that I now knew to be Dylan gallops to its side and tries to herd it back towards the house whilst Bella starts to growl at anyone who would approach it. It was extremely strange behaviour. It appears as if they had everything under control until, with an agility matched by few, the wolf slides under Dylan’s stomach and round the back of Bella and continues towards Andy at amazing speed.
Bella lets out a howl and I feel the need to intervene so I also make a beeline for Andy hoping to head of the white blur. It launches itself into the air teeth bared and attaches itself to Andy’s back digging in its claws and getting a grip into its fur with its teeth, Andy growls and shakes in an attempt to get it off his back but with no luck, I skid to a halt so as not to hurt the white wolf by mistake. It doesn’t take long for Andy to realise that the thing attached to his back isn’t going anywhere and he changes tactic, throwing himself into the air he spins so his back is facing the ground and lands on the white wolf.
I whine and cringe away as the sound of bones snapping echoes across the field and a chorus of howls echoes right across the field from members of the Clayton pack stopping the members of Andy’s pack in confusion, many of their pack had been lost in this fight but none received this treatment. It’s at this moment that Dylan seems to lose it and charging with teeth bared and a ferocious growl emanating from him he runs at Andy, who is picking himself up of the ground. Dylan collides into Andy’s side and with the impact both go rolling across the ground, whilst they are panting for breath and eyeing each other up for round two Bella joins in getting a grip on Andy’s throat and not letting go the fury in her eyes makes me take a step back. I don’t know what has gotten into the pair but it is terrifying. I look back at the white wolf who is still just lying on the ground, the fur that was immaculate now covered in a fine layer of dust from the dirt making it more grey than white.
When Bella is finally satisfied with what I am sure is the death of Andy, something that makes me sadder than the death of my grandfather ever could, she runs over to the white wolf and I follow close behind, she transforms back into a human and pulls the lifeless body of the wolf to her own “Get the doctor! Someone get the doctor!” She screams as she hugs its head, then she crumbles over it and her body begins to shake with sobs into the fur of the unknown wolf. Dylan comes across next and leans down next to Bella, cradling her in his arms and rocking her gently back and forth, neither caring that they are naked in the middle of a freezing cold field, she turns to him and buries her head in his chest. “Why Dylan? Why did this happen?” She cries.
He leans down so his face is buried in her curly red hair. “I don’t know.” Is all he can say. I look around the group and each face shows some sort of sadness, I find Mary and Rob in the crowd, Mary is lying on the floor with her head hidden by her paws and Rob is sat next to her with one paw over her as a sign of love and protection, like a shield. It would seem that everyone on this field knows what is going on except me and the remaining members of Andy’s pack that no longer seem so confident now that their leader is dead, I notice a few sneaking away and I hope for their sake that I will never see those particular people again as I will kill them.
“Rob what’s going on? I haven’t got a link to the Clayton pack!” I shout at him.
After a moment of silence, “It’s Rosie.” Is his sad reply.
