Kira
Kira slipped as quietly out of bed as possible, sending prayers out that Jackson wouldn't wake up before she was able to get back. She'd considered briefly about slipping some kind of sleeping drought in his dinner but had thought better of it. He was too suspicious, he'd been on high alert for weeks now and if he detected anything even slightly off, she was done for. Kira knew that it was her own fault. She was beginning to grow, her child was prospering and while she was thrilled at the progress of her little one she was also aware that her scent was changing rapidly and soon she'd be discovered. She had less than a week before things came to light and as a result, she needed to speak to the one in charge of all of this. With every step closer to the door and out of the house her heart seemed to this ever faster against her rib cage. Her hands shook as she finally grasped around the door handle.
Kira tried to let out a slow breath to steady herself but it seemed the comfort she needed wasn't within reach. Her apprehension had grown everyday that she still remained within these walls. Part of her knew that if she was discovered that she deserved any punishment doled out.
But did her child deserve to die as well? She knew the answer to that. Kira had never imagined her life would wind up this way.
Bitterly she laughed, and this was all because she wanted to find her birth mother. Had she stayed with her adoptive parents and married Jakob like she was supposed to she wouldn't be worried for her life.
Her hand turned the knob, twisting as quietly as possible as not to wake anyone within the house that could alert Jackson. When the bolt disengaged with a whisper, she tugged the large door open only to stop in her tracks as a voice broke the silence of the night.
"Where are you going?"
Her eyes closed briefly as her hand fell from the door. The only thing that came to mind was her adoptive dad's favorite warning;
Curiosity killed the cat, Kira-bear.
Jackson
Kira sat somberly on the couch, cradling the swell of her tummy under her hands, sobbing softly as I sat with my mother and father trying to process all of the information I'd just been given.
She was eight years older than I was rather than two younger. She didn't teach, never had, and she was a Witch. Her sights had been set for me from the moment we'd met.
I had known something was wrong. I had known that Kira was hiding a truth from me. I'd had no idea that it was this.
My Mate was not Kira.
My Mate was a murderer.
My Mate was a man.
There were more elaborate truths in play but those were the three I was stuck on. Why?
Because I had unknowingly betrayed my Mate and that knowledge made me weak. All my life I had been taught how to treasure my Mate and even though I had been unaware, I had dine just the opposite of that. How had I not known? Being Mated wasn't just the knowledge of loving someone and being made for them, it was an electric current, a scent, it was a connection. And I had completely missed that most of it wasn't there.
"How did you do it and can it be undone?" The hoarse quality of my voice surprised me. I had wanted to sound unaffected, I didn't want to let her know that she'd succeeded.
"My birth mother supplied me with the seed and the hair of your true Mate... I was able to... inseminate myself after taking his hair and making a tea of it to help mask my own scent... and yes, it can be undone." The scent of terror clouded the office like a bad perfume. Kira was pale and shaking.
Seed? Holy Goddess.
I knew what this meant. The child she was carrying wasn't mine, but my Mate's. I was grateful to be sitting as the oxygen was knocked out of me. I couldn't speak anymore. My mother's warm hand settled over mind while my father took his turn to speak. He asked for the truth of who Kira was, where she had come from. We listened as she spoke, more my parents than me.
I was still reeling.
Would he want me?
What about this child? Once he knew, would he accept it? Could I?
Had he really committed murder in cold blood?
"Before we have you escorted to a secure area, we need to know something else, Kira." My head jerked up at dad's words. Kira's reddened eyes widened and she nibbled her lip but nodded anyway. "Who is your birth mother?"
The room was eerily silent as we all awaited her response. The sun was beginning to peek through the curtains, illuminating the planes of Kira's ashen face. My mother's breathing hitched -- her grasp on mine tightened.
"Luna Amber Parks."
