I smile thinly at the policeman who’s talking to Dean. The man is so shaken by the dead clerk, he can barely tell us what’s happening. He’s describing the gashes when a chill runs down my spine. Slowly, I look around me. All I see are police and frightened motel guests. The only one that stands out at all is a girl in a hoodie, her shoulders slumped with terrible posture, earbud cords connecting her to the iPod in her hand.
Strands of long red hair tumble from beneath the deep hood, catching the sunlight. Why does she seem suspicious to me? The only odd thing about her is that she’s so much closer to the crime scene than most of the other people. I’m about to take a step towards her when Dean jabs my arm.
“Earth to Sammy.” He hisses, giving me a look, “We’re going in now.”
Reluctantly, I turn away from the girl and walk into the office with Dean. I look back one more time before we step inside, only to see the back of the gray hoodie disappearing into the crowd.
