You looked on with tired eyes as you returned from your mission with Genji and Mercy, eager to collapse into your bed and drift off to sleep. You had been working at Overwatch for a year now, having started as a simple Internship with Winston, before he took you on as a full recruit. As like most workplaces, some people liked you and some did not, however the ones you cared about did, and that's what truly mattered. One of the people who had befriended you was Genji; it was his brother, Hanzo, that had not. You were never quite sure why, though he may have disliked how close you had become to the cyborg, and was worried that your friendship would flourish into something more... personal. You had contemplated this a few times, and although you liked Genji a lot, you weren't sure if a relationship with him would work out. It wouldn't be a lie to say that you wouldn't mind something more than "just friends", but in the grand scheme of things, it felt terribly unrealistic. Mercy, or Angela, seemed more like a motherly figure to you, yet you didn't really believe that anyone disliked her - she was much too sweet. That, and it wouldn't be the best idea to fall out with the best healer on the team . The door to the shuttle opened with an irritable creak before it thumped to the ground, almost shaking you from your worn out state. You let Genji and Mercy leave before you, hauling your bag off the ground and heaving it onto your back with an audible grunt. You followed them at a steady pace yet as your gaze swept over Genji, you took notice that he was gazing at his hands. You furrowed your brows and quickened your steps to match his, realising he was flexing his robotic fingers.
"Are you okay?" You murmured softly so no one would overhear. Genji's head jerked upwards, yet once he realised it was you his shoulders slackened again.
"Ah," His voice was filled with nervousness. "Yes, [Y/N], I am. I just..." He sighed before adding. "I would prefer to talk about this elsewhere." You nod to him, surprised that he wanted to speak about what was bothering him to you, but upon further consideration you wondered if that was because you were the only one who had noticed. You accompanied the cyborg through the base and every now and then he would turn his head slightly to see if you were still following him. He lead you to his room and let you in; it wasn't unlike him to do so, as you often spent a lot of times in each others' rooms talking. 'Probably another reason Hanzo hates me' you thought. You dropped your bag beside the foot of the bed and seated yourself atop the mattress. Genji, however, refrained from sitting down and instead paced around the room slowly, returning his attention to his hands. It was a while before you spoke.
"What's on your mind?" You asked, concern in your voice as well as your gaze. Genji paused, his back to you and sighed again. He slowly turned on his toes to show you his hands, and you gazed at them with interest - you found nothing abnormal.
"Don't you see?" He asked, barely a whisper. His voice seemed to be shaking, and you realised it was possible he was having some form of nervous breakdown.
"See what?" You replied, afraid for his response. Genji sat down heavily beside you, leaning over with his elbows against his knees.
"What I am?" He answered, his words strangely hushed. "Am I human, [Y/N], or a cyborg?"
"Does it matter?" You whispered, turning your head to face him and finding his head was tilted away from you. "Is it bad to be both?" Genji's chin dipped at your words.
"It is difficult," He murmured, his voice shaking. "For I retain my human emotions, yet when I see myself I am a cyborg. I do not understand when the human ends, and the cyborg begins." You gazed at him for a few moments, only the sound of your breathing cut through the air.
"Come here." You spoke gently after a few minutes of silence and he turned his gaze to you as you shuffled to sit cross-legged, facing him. After some consideration, he finally mirrored your pose, and your knees touched gently. You reached towards him and placed your hand on his chest, feeling the soft thump of his heart, before using your free hand to place his own over his heart. He watched you in silence as you gently took hold of his other hand, your gaze locked with his, and placed it over your own heart. He sat in silence, and you did not break your attention on him. "Do you feel it?" You whispered after a moment, not entirely sure how his nerves worked, and Genji dipped his head in a silent confirmation.
