I was in a hospital today and decided to write this.
/;/;/;/;/;/;;/;/;/;
I sat in my hospital bed, the beeping of my heart monitor lulling me too sleep. No! I can't fall asleep, I'm waiting for St3v3 to come for his visit. Every day he could St3v3 would come and talk to me for a few hours, it was the highlight of these boring days here. Maybe today he would have R1ch with him. I looked around at the familiar surroundings, white walls, an IV in my wrist, the IV bag, the heart monitor, will it ever change?
I heard loud voices down the hallway, don't they know this is the children's department?! I immediately recognized St3v3's voice as he tried to make the other voices quiet down, but instead the kept yelling at him. I shakily stood up and removed my IV, no doubt sending an alarm to the nurses, and started my walk (stumble) to my door. Upon reaching it I opened it and leaned on the doorframe for support, taking in the sight of almost six people yelling at poor St3v3 while three random kids hung back and watched. I put my finger to my lips and shushed them loudly, "This is the children's department! Be quieter!" I whisper-yelled at them with my gravely, underused voice. St3v3 perked up at my voice and ran over to me, giving me what I call a Vehicon hug. (A hug where you are picked up and squeezed tightly) once he set me down my gaze met the surprised ones of the people who yelled at him. "St3v3, carry me." I commanded, but nuzzled him to show I was not ordering him around. He nodded and picked me up bridal style, taking me over to the people. There were five men and a woman, not counting the kids, standing there. I glared at them and asked "What are you doing here, especially yelling at St3v3! He is allowed here whenever he wants by the staff, but I don't recognize any of you!"
The man with blue hair stepped forward, "We are here to apprehend this man of behalf of the government." My jaw dropped, before setting angrily as I glared at the group. "None of you's look like cops!" I heard a small voice say boldly. I turned to see that a handful of children had come out of their rooms to protect St3v3. "Yeah! He's our friend! Your not taking him anywhere!" Squeaked Sally's voice, she was autistic and only opened up around St3v3 and I. St3v3 meant a lot to me and the other children here, and while I was seventeen and could understand the fear hospitals brought many of the kids here where very young, but St3v3 helped them understand that there was nothing to fear. "You can't take away May's prince!" Spoke a timid little voice, St3v3 chuckled as the four year old girl with Down syndrome spoke up from the back of the small group of children. The kids always called St3v3 my prince and me his princess, so we used it to tell stories to them about how St3v3 was an alien prince fleeing from his kingdom and I was a Amazonian princess he ran into, they always enjoyed them so it became our backstory. Then a teenager spoke up, it was Ty. Ty broke his arm and, like me, was put with the younger children due to overcrowding downstairs. "You can't take him away, he keeps them alive." He said the them. An older boy in a white, blue, and red T-shirt spoke up from the group. "What do you mean 'he keeps them alive'?" He asked, confusion masking all of their faces except the red and white haired man in a lab coat.
"Amy has Down syndrome, Sally has autism, Jake has a failing kidney and his brother James is about to give one up, Leah has a broken pelvis, Cassie had her appendix burst a week ago, Lee needs surgery, Ginny has blood cancer and Rain has skin cancer, Donnie went blind, Danté has Osteogenesis Imperfecta, all of these kids listen to May and Steve tell stories and it gives them a reason to get better or at least try. May has leukemia and Steve has bad problems with his larynx, or vocalizer as he calls it, but every day they can Steve comes here and gets May and they brighten the days of dozens of kids. Do us a favor and don't take away these kids light." Ty told them, I'm surprised he picked up all the names of the kids here, but I should've known he would help.
Then Donnie's soft little voice rang through the room, "But soon May will go to heaven and Steve will continue telling us stories alone." Instantly the group froze and I gave the blind boy a sad smile. It's true, in a week I'm supposed to die and St3v3 will work with the kids alone. At this moment a black man in a suit exited the elevator and stood in front of the group, "I am special agent William Fowler and I'm here to collect Steve." He said calmly.
Then two children stepped in front of me and St3v3 and I nearly cried at who they were. In front of us stood Ginny and rain, leaning on each other to stand. Ginny was pale and thin from her latest treatment and Rains skin was worse than normal, but both of the first graders held a look of determination. "My dad worked for the government, he died working for them. But I was always told he died in good work, not collecting good men and taking them away!" Ginny yelled weakly. "You can't take Steve from May, you'll kill her! She has another week, let her go peacefully!" Rain said angrily.
I looked over at the army of children and smiled softly before speaking. " Thank you my little Amazons and," "And my splinted soldiers," St3v3 addressed the boys, "but the nurses are here, let them take you back to your rooms. Don't worry though, I'll protect my prince." I said with a small wink.
Once the children that came out were safely in their rooms the nurses started arguing with the group until the finally gave up and left. When they did the nurses rehooked me up after story-time and St3v3 left with the promise of his return tomorrow.
Every day that week St3v3 came, and everyday after story-time he would take me out of the hospital and carry me around the city. Soon we became well known in the town and people would point us out and take pictures with us. They all respected St3v3 for helping me in my last days and both of us for helping the children. Every day adults and children alike would crowd around St3v3 and I as we told stories of our journeys as the Amazon princess and the alien prince she loves.
Isn't it funny that the best days of my life were the last?
On my last day I couldn't get up, so St3v3 and R1ch came and carried me, attached to all my equipment, around town. I swear that every person in that town said goodbye to me that day. Upon returning we told the kids one last story to cap off our adventures together.
"And tonight the beautiful princess will go to an amazing place almost as beautiful as her, where she will wait for her prince to join her one day" "and the prince will continue in the war, keeping watch over all their amazons and soldiers, till one day he will see his one true love again."
That night the doctors were right, and I ran out of time. I know it hurt St3v3 and the other vehicons who visited, but I had to go. He stayed true to his promise and kept the children happy daily for years, even after the war he fought in ended. One fateful day St3v3 joined me, but the story didn't end there. For Ty took over our job of keeping the children happy.
I was always afraid of letting go, of tomorrow taking away the ones I loved. But now I know that tomorrow will always come, it's just up to you to make it brighter.
For you, for others, even for your guardian angel... or vehicon.
I'm glad that tomorrow came. Cause if tomorrow never comes, then things never change, and change keeps the world turning.
Goodbye my little Amazons and soldiers, keep fighting.
Sincerely,
Princess May and Prince St3v3.
