Black & White

This is an A.U. where everything you see is black and white until you meet your soulmate. Then, once your soulmate dies, everything goes back to black and white. I take no credit for the original idea, just the story I write.

I woke up like any other day. The world was its usual shade of gray and white. Throwing on some jeans and a shirt, I walked out of the door. Getting in my car, I headed to the vet clinic that I worked at. I sighed as I pulled up. Just another day, I thought.

The day was going normally, until my boss, Lillith, called me to her office. I knocked on the door and poked my head in. She gestured for me to enter, and I did. I sat down and gave her a confused look.

"Carmen, I wanted to talk to you. Relax, it isn't anything bad." She said, noticing the worried expression on my face. "Have you met your soulmate yet? Can you see color?" I shook my head. She nodded in understanding. "And how old are you now?"

"34. All my friends have met their soulmate, and they tell me about these amazing colors, but I haven't met mine. I'm starting worry that maybe I don't have one." I don't know what made me say that, but it just slipped out. I heard Lillith gasp quietly and saw her hand move to cover her mouth. In this world, it was a rare occasion for someone not to have a soulmate. But it did happen. As children, we heard about those people without soulmates as sad stories, and hoped never to be one. But it was the truth. I was truly beginning to worry that I might not have a soulmate, that my world would be black and white forever. As this thought rushed through my head, a tear slipped down my cheek.

"Carmen, I'm 35, and all my friends have found their soulmates. I'm sure you'll find yours." She got up and walked over to me, reaching out her hand to wipe the tear off my cheek. As she did, I saw a sudden rush of color. I gasped as the world transformed, and I saw colors I had only heard about in stories with my own eyes.

"D- Do you see it too?" I whispered. Lillith, however, shook her head and looked at me like I was crazy.

"What are you talking about, Carmen?" Those few words were all it took. Quickly uttering the words 'I quit', I dashed out of the office, fighting back tears. Not noticing how beautiful the world outside was, I ran to my car and let the tears fall.

I was one of the sad stories. Except my story was different. I had a soulmate. I had found her. She just wasn't mine.
