Lying

This is an A.U. where no matter what, someone cannot lie to their soulmate. I take no credit for the original idea, just the story I write.

Walking out of my front door, I hopped on my bike. It was a Thursday, and I had faked being sick to skip class. I'm 15, and being a sophomore in high school can be pretty boring. As I glided down the side of the road, I took a deep breath and smiled. My waist length  hair was flowing freely behind me in the wind and the crisp autumn air smelled of freedom and freshly fallen leaves. As I pulled to a stop at my favorite grove, which was about 5 miles away from my house, I grinned. As I walked over to my favorite tree, I stopped. There was a boy sitting there. He looked no older than 16. Chaining my bike to a young tree, I cautiously approached him. I lightly tapped him on the shoulder, causing him to jump. I giggled, all tension gone.

"Hi. I'm Maddie. Who are you?" I asked, sticking out my right hand. He stood and smiled at me.

"The name's Tyler. But you can call me Ty." We shook hands. He sat back down and pulled out the book he was reading, A Forest of Darkness. I gasped quietly in surprise.

"That's one of my favorite books." I whispered on an impulse. I hadn't meant to say that, and gave myself a puzzled look. He let out a small chuckle, which made me blush and look away.

"I've loved it since I was 10. The meaning behind everything is so deep, and it just speaks to me on a whole new level, you know?" He looked surprised at his words. Putting his bookmark in, he snapped the book shut. I nodded as he stood up. "Who are you that I can't seem to lie to y-" He cut himself off as be realized.

"Did I finally find you?" I whispered quietly. He covered his mouth with a hand. Everything snapped into place as I gasped and stood. This was why everything had snapped so quickly with us. Why I had said those things that I had never told anyone else.

"You-You're my soulmate." We whispered in unison. Slowly putting my hand down, a smile spread across my face. Sure, we were young, but finding your soulmate was a day everyone remembered and a day everyone looked forward to with anxiety, joy, and anticipation. I grabbed his hand and a mischievous grin replaced my smile.

"Come on." I said. I ran towards the small, still surfaced pond that waited just beyond the tree line. Luckily I had worn my swim suit under my clothes. Pulling of my shorts and yellow shirt, I dove head first into the water. Emerging with a smile, I saw Ty dive in after me. When he surfaced, I laughed and splashed him. Before he could retaliate, I sunk under the clear surface of the water. He followed, and I smiled as he grabbed my waist. I leaned in and our lips made gentle contact. I smiled as we broke apart, then surfaced for air.

All the stories told by the elderly when we were kids, all the personal tales told by teachers and parents. They did all come true. But this was a day I would cherish forever. This was the day I would remember until I died.
