"Katerina. It's time to go to the rink."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My name is Katerina Luna Samarina.
I was born in Sochi, Russia from a Russian and English mix family. From what I was told, my biological parents gave me up for adoption because they couldn't afford to pay for a child. Also, they were teenagers at the time.
I was with social services for about a week until a Russian couple from America contacted social services for adoption. When they flew to Russia to see me, they fell in love with me instantly. They signed the paperwork and waited for approval. Officially, the adoption was finalized on Christmas Eve. I was their best present ever.
My father, Nicholas, was a business man. His work required him to travel a lot especially abroad for business deals. Mostly, he traveled to Russia for business. My mother, Natalia, worked for the newspaper and a columnist from home.
They did have a son, Ivan who was four years older than me. For some reason, my mother wasn't able to have children after Ivan was born. They had tried two years with no results. In their third year, they tried different procedures to have a child but, no success.
Recently, we moved to Russia due to my father's work. The move wasn't too surprising. We did tend to move a lot. Since I was adopted, we moved from San Francisco, California to Washington D.C., Maryland. Then, we moved from Maryland to Seattle, Washington. Lastly, we moved from Seattle to St. Petersburg, Russia.  So growing up, I never really made friends.
Last year, when we visited our relatives, my parents took me and Ivan to the local Ice skating rink so that I could learn to skate. To tell you the truth, I hated ice skating. I fell so many time that I gotten bruises on my butt.
Anyways, back to the now.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Today, my mother was taking me to the ice rink. She was going to drop me off and go meet with my father in the city to shop. I guessed that they were getting my Christmas present and stuff for my birthday. They celebrated my birthday on my adoption day

"Do we have to?" I asked her. She gave me a smile. "Don't worry. You will have fun this time. I was told that there will be lots of kids there today," she told me. {Is that the reason?} Last year, I was one of the few kids in the ice rink including my brother. We ended up going home early because I kept falling. I hated skating since then.

"What about Ivan?" I asked. "He is at a friends house for a sleep over," she told me. Usually, Ivan was the protective type. He would sometimes get me out of situations. Apparently, he wasn't going to be help me today.

"Okay," I mumbled.

After getting ready, we walked to the skating rink that wasn't to far from my relative's home. Weather was cold outside. I wasn't too surprise since it was winter in Russia. The snow covered the ground like a blanket. Kids were running around and throwing snow balls at each other. The adults walked to their destination.

Soon, we reached the ice rink. I could see that the building was repainted into a pale blue. Last year, the building was pale green. {That looks better.} We walked into the building to be greeted with comfortable temperature.

As we walked toward the rink, we saw at a familiar face. An older man gave us a smile.

"Ah. Katerina. Here to skate again?" Mr. Abaza asked me. I gave him a small nod. He gave me a smile. "You came on a great day. We have many children here who are learning to skate. You can learn with them," he told me.

"Okay."

Mother let go of my hand and gave me a hug.

"Have fun Katerina," Mother said to me before she walked out of the door. Mr. Abaza gave me a smile. "Follow me so that I can get you a pair of skates," he told me. I gave him a small nod and followed him.

"Let's see.....I should have your size," I heard him as he through the shelves of skates. I looked at the skating rink to see many kids on the ice. Some of them had fallen onto the ice and started to cry for their parents.

{It's going to be like last year. I know it.}

"Here you go. These should fit you nicely."

I took the white skates and started to change into them. "If you need anything, I'll be here," he told me. "Okay. Thank you," I said and finished tying my skates. Mr. Abaza walked behind the counter to check the skates.

Slowly, I got up and my legs wobbled. I grabbed onto the edge of the rink and slowly walked to the entrance. It was almost difficult to walk on blades. Rollerblades were a bit easier but, blades were thinner than the roller blade wheels.

On the rink, many kids were skating around the rink with the ice rink's wall's as support. A few kids were skating with no support. They were skating very well. {I wonder if I can skate like that....} I let out a big breath and stepped onto the ice.

Last year, Ivan showed me how to do baby steps on the ice. I had to step onto the ice two time and then slide. I placed my hand above the rink's walls and started to take baby steps onto the ice. For five minutes, I didn't fall onto the ground. I felt myself smile.

{I'm doing it.}

THUD!

"Ow."

I spoked to soon. When I finished my thoughts, I fell onto the ice. Luckily, I fell on my butt and not my stomach. That was the first lesson I had learned from my brother. I started to feel bad. The fall had confirmed that I didn't like skating.

"Need help?"

I looked up to see a boy with grey hair and piercing blue eyes. He was one of the few kids who skated pretty well. He gave out his hand to me with a smile on his face. Hesitantly, I took his hand. He was very gentle when he pulled me to a standing position.

"Thank you," I said to him. He gave me a smile.

"I'm Victor. Victor Nikiforov."

I gave him a small smile.

"Katerina Samarina."

His smile grew.

"Let's be best friends."
