A week later, Katara received her audition results. She had been accepted into the Music club! The girl was glad for the opportunity to practice her skills with other experienced musicians.
The suspense had been killing her all week, but once she saw her name under the Music club’s acceptance list, she breathed a well-needed sigh of relief.
Now, after school, Katara smiled anxiously as she walked into the classroom held by the Music club. Kids all around her were tuning their instruments, annotating sheets of music, and discussing new songs. The sight was comforting to Katara: a group of people who were passionate about music, just like her.
She quickly signed the attendance sheet posted on the door before taking a seat at an empty desk. After a few minutes, the club president called out to the class.
“Attention, everyone, attention! Let’s get ready to start our meeting!” a girl in glasses said. She looked rather academic with her short, auburn hair in a tight bun, her clipboard in hand, and her school-girl attire. As soon as everyone looked up at her, the girl continued to speak.
“Thank you. Now, I’d like to welcome you all to Omashu High’s Music Club!” she said enthusiastically. “I’m Suki, your club president. All questions, concerns, and comments shall be presented to me, as I am the leader of this established organization. I manage the concerts, spirit event entertainment, and so forth. So, anything you want to know, you come to me.”
Katara felt a bit intimidated by Suki, but a strong leader is what every group needs. The president’s head was held high, dignified and focused on the class in front of her. Katara watched as the students leaned back in their seats away from Suki’s overwhelming presence.
“Now, on to our first order of business. As you should know, our first school event is several weeks: the annual Back to School concert. The concert will feature all kinds of art, but of course, what we are focusing on is music. Therefore, we will have a booth to showcase our esteemed Music club and what great musical talent we have,” Suki explained proudly.
“And so, if we want to give our club the best representation possible, we need to play something spectacular at our booth. Something new and original. Something so pleasing to the ear that anyone who hears it will want to know how to play it and admire it for its beauty!” Suki said over-passionately, her fist held high in front of her with a determined look on her face. The class, however, wore blank expressions in response to her intensity and a silence ensued. Suki realized she was getting a little too excited, so she straightened up and cleared her throat.
“Anyway, to fully assess our musical talent as a whole, I have decided that everyone will pair up with another club member. You and your partner’s mission will be to create an interesting piece using whichever instruments you both are most proficient in. At the end of next week, we’ll present our compositions. Whichever one we collectively deem the best will be the song played at the concert,” Suki declared with an intense look.
Group work wasn’t necessarily Katara’s thing, but she got along well with most people so she decided to not make a big deal out of it. The club members began to scatter back to their place, when a loud whistle sounded throughout the classroom. When everyone looked back up, Suki thankfully dropped the infernal whistle.
