The last school bell of the day finally rang, sending the wooden classroom doors flying open with students filing out quickly to go home. Katara departed her history class to go to her locker, Aang by her side. Aang babbled on about the movie he saw last night and how undeniably hilarious it was while Katara put her textbook in her locker.
“And the hero? Oh my god, I’ve seen more fur on him than an actual polar bear dog. And his fighting skills were so funny to watch. They looked completely fake, like those robot things wanted him to win.” Aang said with laughter. “The Adventures of Nuktuk: Hero of the South, you’ve gotta see it Katara. As a five-star comedy though, not an action film.”
Katara flipped through her music notes one more time, not really listening too carefully to Aang’s movie review. Aang, noting her silence, realized her lack of attention and grew a little concerned.
“Uh, Katara? Were you even listening?” Aang asked. Katara snapped back her attention at Aang. She became aware at just how rude she was being.
“My bad, Aang. I was just reviewing my piece one last time for the Music club. What was the name of the movie, I’m sorry.” Katara asked, feeling bad for neglecting her friend.
“Don’t worry about that now. I get that you want to be focused.” Aang said with genuine forgiveness. “You’re gonna do great Katara.” he said encouragingly.
“Thanks, Aang. I hope so. I just gotta ask Zuko about one last minute edit I’d like to make.” Katara said as she eyed her notes once again. The pleasant mention of Zuko sent Aang into puzzlement.
“You sure he wouldn’t just shoot it down? He doesn’t seem very optimistic after all.” Aang commented.
Katara looked up from her folder to realize that she didn’t tell Aang about her new Zuko situation.
“Actually, he’s a lot better now. He’s great actually.” Katara reassured. Katara’s comment only confused Aang further.
“Wait, really?” Aang asked, unbelieving. Katara then explained how they decided to ‘start over’ and how advantageous making a truce was now that Zuko was actually a lot nicer. Aang’s brows furrowed further as he heard Katara go on, which initially went unnoticed by Katara.
“Uh huh...” Aang said, trying to understand. Katara could finally see his doubt, and it suddenly made her feel indifferent about Zuko. But Katara wanted to give Zuko a chance, it was the only way to ensure that their project runs smoothly. Plus he seems like a really good friend, she enjoyed being with him. She could talk so easily with him, and he with her. It felt unsettling that her old friend didn’t trust her new one.
“He’s trying to be friendly, Aang. An effort is all I need, and it’ll make working together a lot easier.” Katara said as she closed her locker shut. Aang simply nodded in subtle understanding.
“Okay, got it. I mean its not like you guys are super close, you just chill when you have to practice and that’s about it.” Aang said, almost making it sound like he was talking with himself rather than Katara.
