The lift came to an abrupt stop, all thanks to my stolen possession and my will to figure things out, starting with Doctor John Smith.
“Alright. Brilliant. Good. Hang on.” I eyed the security camera in the corner.
I walked into the corner and climbed onto the railing there. I could feel a curious stare on me as I worked. Sitting on the railing gave me an extra few inches on my 5’4”. I lifted one hand and pulled hard on the cable connecting the camera to the security office and the power. We were invisible now.
“Okay. All done. Got any questions?” I looked at Dr. Smith.
“Um, well, you see. I’m not entirely sure what to ask or how to ask it.” The words tumbled out of his mouth. One of his eyebrows was climbing up his forehead.
“Okay. That’s expected. I’ll tell you one thing if you weren’t warned or haven’t figured it out yet: I’m not your typical detective; I don’t play by normal detectives’ rules. I’m not easy to work with and I don’t work with many people; especially liars, cheats, or idiots. I have yet to determine if you’re brilliant, I don’t think you’re cheating, but you are lying.” I gave him an accusatory stare. He looked shocked. “Oh, and don’t bother denying it. It’s written all over you face. The lift doesn’t move until you’re not lying about this case or yourself. So, spill.”
He looked at me and his jaw dropped. I had surprised him, so he hadn’t been warned. I smirked. He opened his mouth like a fish out of water and then shut it. He ran his fingers through his hair and again he opened his mouth only to close it. He looked directly into my eyes and nodded. I raised one eyebrow in a silent question.
“Okay. I don’t know how you knew, but I was lying. It was only a small lie though. I don’t really work at the hospital, but I am a doctor. I found the girls while looking around the hospital for a… friend.” He sighed and shrugged.
“There, that wasn’t so hard.” He was still hiding something, but everything he said had been the truth this time so I could let it go for now. “Wait, hang on. Girls? As in plural?” I asked. Earlier he mentioned the murder as if there had only been one victim.
“Yeah. Didn’t I mention that part?” He asked.
“No. I don’t believe you did.” I said.
“Then, yes. Girls, with an ‘s’.” He explained.
“If you’re comfortable with it, can you describe what you saw?” I asked.
“Okay. Well, I think both of the young women have been stabbed. They are twins and there’s has been the third murder in that hospital this week.”
“Could you explain the other murders?” I asked grabbing my notepad to jot down the information I just received while preparing for new info at the same time.
“The other two murders have been young women as well. They have all been in the same ward as well.”
“Which ward?” I asked while scribbling some notes.
“They were in for head trauma or memory loss.” He said.
“Can you explain the victims to me please?”
“All four were blonde women within the age of twenty-three to twenty-seven.” He said.
“So, four victims, three murders, all at one particular hospital and you would say the murder weapon was a-”
“Knife.” He said. “A knife.”
“A knife. Okay. Anything else you care to share while we’re invisible?” I asked nodding at the camera.
“Um.” He paused and a look of disgust crossed his features. “All the victims show signs of struggle and have injuries that appear to be from torture.” He sounded revolted by this fact. It was wrong.
“Okay.” I swallowed the lump that was beginning to form in my throat. I finished writing all the information he gave me. “You certainly seem informed.”
“I’ve been looking into it since murder number two. Number three happened today and the attacks are getting more frequent so I thought it best to bring in a professional.” He explained.
“Oh.” I said simply reviewing my notes in my head. The description of the victims was what puzzled me most. “Oh.” I said again getting what was so important about the information. “Oh, John, have you picked the right time to come to the police.” I said and clapped my hands in front of me. “This is going to be exciting and full of surprises. I hope we catch the killer before he strikes again, but we have to understand his game first. Oh John. John, you absolutely brilliant fool!”
“What?” He asked, sounding a bit offended.
“You don’t give this sort of case to a detective like me. Lord, it must be Christmas.” I reached my hand down and turned the key back and the lift would move once more. I put the key back with the others on my ring.
“Christmas? Murder isn’t like Christmas. What kind of case?” He asked sounding desperate for answers, I knew the feeling.
“These cases are always hard because the killer has to make a mistake first before you can catch on to him.” I said mostly to myself.
“Oi! Earth to Cassidy!” He yelled at me.
“Mm?” I looked up.
“What kind of case?” He asked in small and sincere tone.
The lift came to a stop and a ding announced our arrival. I turned to face John head on.
“Mr. Smith. We have a serial killer on our hands.” I turned away as the doors opened and stepped out onto the marble floor of the lobby.
John followed me out of the lift and the path I began to take towards the front desk. I began to slip by the counter, but stumbled. I looked down and one of my boots was untied. I squatted so no one could look up my dress and retied it into a bow. I stood up and began to walk again with John following my lead.
“Going somewhere Cassie?” A masculine voice asked from behind the desk.
“Would you look at that? I am. Goodbye, Clark.” I turned around as I spoke using the iciest tone I could muster.
Looking directly at Clark I gave him a mix of a smile and sneer, waved impolitely, and turned back around. I began to walk again, but with a brisker pace. Instead of following me, John also picked up his pace and began to walk beside me. We reached the front doors and I pushed them open angrily.
