Mr. Harkness was knocking on the door angrily. I walked close enough so he would hear me through the wood.
"Sorry Captain. First come, first served." I smiled and turned to the dead patients. I went searching for their charts.
"Let me in!" He yelled through the door.
"No!" I yelled back, picking up the one the victim's charts.
There was a harder thump on the wood. It sounded like he kicked the door. I smiled. I looked over the chart and set it back. I found the other girl's chart and perused it as well. They had one big similarity other than being twins; they had a similar brain tumor eating at their memories. Death for the two wasn't far off. How sad; I frowned. The doctors taking care of them put them in a medically induced coma to keep the pain at bay while they lived out the rest of what little time they had. I pulled out my notepad and reached for my pen. It was no longer tucked behind my ear. I must have knocked it loose when putting on my glasses. I walked to the door.
"John?" I asked through the wood.
I heard some shuffling and the welsh woman curse once while Captain Jack was mumbling something inaudible. I think I pissed off the pair of them.
"Yeah?" He asked back.
"Can you get my pen for me, then slip it under the door?" I requested.
"Yeah, sure." I waited while he went to retrieve my pen. Time seemed to drag on. "I'm going to slip it under now." He informed me.
I looked down and saw my pen peek under. I picked it up.
"Thanks." I said distracted as I began to write down the condition of the victims before they were killed.
I walked back to the charts and looked through them again. There was nothing else that stood out to me. There was a knock on the door. I walked back to answer it.
"Yes?" I asked.
"Dr. Nethers?" He inquired shyly.
"Yes Richard?"
"I got the tapes." He was gaining confidence again.
"Mr. Miles, you are brilliant. Thank you. Hand them to my friend out there and make sure it's the ginger man not the charming guy who is trying to get in." I said through the wood.
I turned back to the forensics team; they were in the process of packing up. They were quick to look and poke about.
"You guys are done? Excellent. Could you leave that equipment for me to utilize, thank you." I pointed to the nearest case of equipment.
The doctor who was packing it up stopped and stepped away.
"Okay. When you finish up, I will unlock the door and let you leave then allow entrance to Mr. Miles and Captain Harkness and company. Alright," they closed all the cases except for the one I requested, "all done?" I asked.
The doctors nodded. They were shy and intimidated by my presence the way their body language looked. I stepped up to the door and placed my hand on the lock.
"I'm about to open this door. The forensics team will exit and Mr. Miles will enter after. Then, I don't care what happens as long as no one disturbs me. Okay?" I unlocked the door and pulled it open for the forensics team and stepped away.
I watched as Richard stepped inside the room sheepishly. I smiled at him and turned around. This was me not caring about who came in. I grabbed my pen and looked at the victims for the first time. I examined the body on my right first. I walked around it twice and then stopped by the head. I began to jot down my notes. This girl appeared to have been strangled, but the lungs were also punctured with a knife; before that though, she had been slashed across the stomach so she would bleed. I walked to the other body and examined it the same way. The injuries were the same down to the very last detail, but something felt off about the way they were laying. The arms were not at their sides as they would have been in a coma. The way they were laid suggested a struggle. I snapped my fingers together and wrote down my theory. I closed my notepad sharply and shoved it into a pocket.
"Mr. Miles, would you hand me a pair of gloves please?" I stuck my hand out, not caring about my surroundings; I was in the zone.
I took a deep breath and felt Richard hand me a pair of gloves. I pulled them on and stepped up to one of the beds. I leaned down to examine the arm closest to me. I moved my gaze up and down and found nothing. I looked up the sleeve; nothing. I switched sides and did the same thing. Halfway up the forearm I spotted a little dried blood. Bingo. I checked her sister's arms and found the same anomaly. I removed the gloves and wrote down my find.
"Mr. Miles?" I gestured for him to come over.
"Yes?"
"Do me a favor and look at both patients’ heartbeats' over the last two days, when they spiked record the time and when it falls dead record the time again the text me." I replied. "Thank you."
I shrugged out of his lab coat, grabbed my notebook, pen, and badge, and offered the coat to him. I turned on my heel and walked out of the room.
"Wait!" Captain Harkness called after me.
I stopped and strode backwards so I was in his view in the doorway.
"Yes?" I asked sweetly.
"What did you find out?" He was leaning against the wall opposite the door.
"Well, Captain, you're going to have to do a lot more than ask to get my notes." I smirked at him and blew him a kiss. "Call my office to set up an appointment." I informed him while slipping my stuff into my pockets.
I walked out of view in search of John. He was leaning against the wall by the lift with his head thrown back and his eyes closed.
