Chapter 2
Waking up to the sound of throw up hitting a toilet was not pleasant at all. The first thing I did was what I did every morning; roll over to check for Kendra. When I didn’t see her, I figured she was in the bathroom. I yawned, not wanting to get closer to the sound. Getting closer would only make me sick, which meant I was pushing her ass out the way so I could throw up. I stretched out my body and yawned as I heard the toilet flush. Kendra appeared in the doorway, looking dehydrated and sick.
“Happy New Year’s,” I smiled, making her narrow her eyes at me. Kendra’s face went from sick to offended in seconds, making me laugh. She tried to say something, but ended up coughing and rushing back to the toilet. I cringed as I heard her gag again. Throwing up was disgusting. “Whenever you’re ready to say good morning, you can.” I rose from the bed, wiping my eyes. My mind was already made up; I wanted to see my mother today. Rummaging through the dresser I heard her walk out the bathroom.
“Good morning, Happy New Year’s, fuck off,” she groaned, sitting on the bed. I shook my head.
“Well, I missed you too babe,” I replied, trying to ignore her rudeness. “I see you had a good night last night.”
“Not even close.” I shook my head.
“Well, you got drunk obviously.”
“Let me deal with this myself.” I huffed out a sigh and shook my head again, grabbing some clothes.”Where are you going?” Laying the clothes on my bed, I looked up at Kendra. She looked a mess, her hair was everywhere and her lips were crusted with throw up.
“I’m going to see my mother.” Kendra scoffed at me and laughed.
“Have fun with that bitch,” she snorted, looking at me in disgust. I looked away from her; I hated the way she referred to my mother.
“She’s not a bitch,” I said, feeling little. This was the Kendra I hated, why couldn’t she be considerate.
“She is to me. Bitch don’t like me, so she’s a bitch.” Kendra grabbed her Marlboro’s from the end and lit one up. My nose scrunched up, trying not to smell the smoke. The smell burned the back of my throat if I was around it too long. “Besides, what you need her for, you got me?” Kendra took another puff of her cigarette and released the smoke through her nose.
“She’s been here longer than you.” I pulled the shirt over my head and found Kendra giving me her infamous look.
“Yeah, but who’s gonna be there for you forever?” I shook my head and smiled.
“You?” Kendra dropped some of the cigarette ash into the ashtray and nodded.
“Of course. You don’t need anybody but me, and that’s fact.” Kendra was always this way around me, but out in public she acted like a lady. Maybe that was why I took to her; she kind of did act like a dude around me.
“You love me right?” I asked, walking over to the mirror and checking out my appearance. Working at a modeling agency for so long had caused me to develop this habit. Elisa had told me that I always had to look my best or she would send me home. Kendra looked my way and smiled.
“You look nice.” I left the mirror, trying to ignore the fact that she hadn’t even answered my question. “Don’t leave the house looking ugly.” She dropped more ashes into the ashtray.
