Chapter 11

"Claire! Kyle!" My mom yells from downstairs. "We are already late enough. Hurry up!"

I don't waste any time. When Andrew told me I was unknowingly going to his house today, I was counting down the hours. I guess I've become more fond of Andrew than weeks ago. I guess I've realized that he's not as awful as I thought. I enjoy being around him because he's funny and, in a strange way, understands me more than others do.

He understands me even more than Harper.

Kyle marches down the stairs, patting his stomach as if it is a drum. "Oh I am so ready for Lynn's cheesy potatoes."

"Are they really that delicious?" I ask Kyle. "Andrew told me they're good, too."

Kyle closes his eyes and continues to rub his stomach. "Lynn's potatoes are amazing. If I could only eat one thing for the rest of my life, I'd eat her potatoes."

"Interesting." I nod my head and sit in the middle of our van. Hollie sits next to me.

"I'm excited!" She yells.

"You are?" My dad asks as he backs out of the garage. "What's getting you so excited?"

She smiles and says, "I get to play with Austin. I like Austin."

She's got me interested on the topic now. "You like Austin? Like, as a friend?"

"Duh," Hollie remarks. "He's not my type."

I laugh. "And what exactly is your type, Hollie?"

"I like bad boys and boys with blonde hair." She rests her feet on the back of Dad's seat. "And blue eyes."

She's ten and already talking about what boys she's into. She can't even pick out her own outfits everyday and she's talking about dating blonde haired, blue-eyed bad boys. Besides, why can't she like Austin in a much friendlier way? What's wrong with a cute, brown-eyed boy like him?

"Blue eyes?" I snort. "I like them, but brown eyes will win me over."

"Brown?" Hollie argues. "They're okay, but blue eyes are so serene."

My parents chuckle from the front. "Hollie, do you even know what serene means?"

Her cheeks redden. "No. But you use it a lot, Mom, so I thought I knew what it means."

I roll my eyes and look back at Kyle. He's clutching his stomach and shaking his head.

We aren't the first to arrive to Andrew's, but we're early enough to get a spot on the curb next to their driveway. Walking up Andrew's driveway feels like a daily routine I go through. Kyle, though, knows this way around much better than I do.

My mom taps the glass door lightly, waving to Lynn from outside. A young, blonde girl opens the door and props it open as we all pile inside. She looks familiar.

"Hello, Kyle," she says.

"Addie," he answers, not sounding as enthused as her.

This must be Addison, Andrew's sister. She seems nice, but everyone seems nice until you get to know them.

"The Mitchell's!" Lynn excitedly says, grasping my mother in her arms.

"Happy Thanksgiving!" My mom sets her container of green bean casserole on the counter.

Addison follows us around and directs us around the house. Kyle leaves me alone with her as he navigates in the opposite direction.

"You must be Claire?" Addison holds out her hand, finally deciding to get acquainted.
