Chapter 16

Calm down, Claire. Calm down.

I continue to repeat the message in my mind to calm myself down. I don't understand how nervous I can be when I've hung out with Andrew alone almost a million times. He's stayed the night at my house almost every night he could since I was six.

Why am I nervous to be around him now? Of all the times?

George is in the front yard, digging through boxes. They seem to be full of Christmas decorations for the holiday season. "That looks like fun," I say.

He looks up and laughs. "Oh, it is," he sarcastically says. "I'm guessing you're here for Andrew?"

I nod my head, hoping that he doesn't notice my idiotic smile. "We're studying again tonight."

"That's what I figured." He rummages through a box and pulls out three strands of lights that are tangled together. "You can just go through the garage, Claire."

"Are you sure?" I hesitantly ask, still facing the front door.

"Totally," he responds. "You're always welcome here. Just invite yourself in any time you want."

I turn on my heels and start to the garage door. "Thanks, Mr. Garfield. It was nice talking to you."

"You too," he says. He can't hide his annoyance of the tangled lights, though.

My hands continue to shake, so after I open the door, I stuff them in my pockets. I don't want to risk anyone seeing them almost fall off my wrists.

"Claire," says Lynn, still wearing the smile she always seems to be wearing. "It's so great to see you again. Looking for Andrew?"

"Yes," I say. Seeing both George and Lynn's smiles almost sends my nerves away. But the person causing all the uneasiness hasn't even smiled at me yet. "Is he downstairs?"

"He should be," she answers, frowning at the stairs. "I heard him and Austin bickering a couple minutes ago. I'll have soup ready for you guys in about a half hour. Make sure he behaves with Austin."

"I will. Thank you." I know she responds, but I'm already halfway down the stairs by the time she does. I think it's funny how an eighteen-year-old like Andrew still has to be told by his mother to behave to his younger sibling. But he's a boy. Boys don't mature until a late age, if they even do at all.

Andrew is going to be one of the few that seems to never mature.

The Two Towers, the second Lord of the Rings, is keeping Austin occupied while he draws as he lies on the floor. I want to watch him draw, but I want to see Andrew even more. I've been waiting all day to be here.

I turn the corner and see him lying on his back next to a dog cage, a book in his hand. His black cat lying on his stomach is even cuter. He is unaware that I've arrived. I want to just freeze this moment so I can stare at him without wasting any time in either of our lives, but I know I can't do that.

"Good book?" I ask.

His elbow hits the side of the dog cage and he drops the book on his cat. "Jesus Christ, Claire bear. You scared the living hell out of me."
