Chapter 23

This Christmas Eve is definitely going to be different than it has been for the past seventeen years. This year, I'm spending some time at Andrew's Christmas getting to know a few of his distant family members and grandparents. I guess it's only fair that I meet his family.

But I've been in deep thought about actually meeting all of them. What if I'm not what they expected Andrew's girlfriend to be like? Odds are, they are wanting Andrew to have a skinny, beautiful, perfect girlfriend.

I don't have the perfect qualities they're most likely searching for.

I almost miss the turn to his street while I think of all the things I don't have. I just have to be myself. Who knows, maybe they'll actually like me?

His driveway is completely packed with cars, so I park a couple feet away from their mailbox. I make sure I'm not in anybody's way before I get out. I grab all the gifts I got for Lynn, George, Addie, Austin and, of course, Andrew.

Lynn and George's gift is simple, but not extremely cheap. I know Lynn likes a fancy restaurant named Denver's BBQ, so I got her a gift card to spend as she wishes. George likes golfing, so I got him thirty free rounds of golf at the most expensive course in Denver. I hope he enjoys it because I had to pull a couple strings to get that.

Austin's gift is exactly what a fourth grade boy would want: a couple new video games. He apparently wanted a new Mario game that Lynn couldn't find anywhere and I ironically found it online. So I bought it as soon as I laid eyes on it.

Addie got things more like something I would want to recieve. I bought her a couple bottles of perfume from Victoria's Secret (they were on sale, so why not?) and a couple decorative supplies to put in her new house she recently bought with her boyfriend.

Lastly, I bought Andrew a new bottle of cologne that I would enjoy smelling on him and a new art set. I must admit that his gift was by far the most expensive, especially the brand new art set, but he deserves it for being so god damn adorable and being the most amazing boyfriend I could ever ask for. I really hope he likes them.

I brush the snow droplets off my boots and slip them off my feet. I'm assuming someone is in the kitchen considering the amazing smell coming from it. I follow the smell and stand in their kitchen.

"Claire!" Lynn leaves the conversation with three other women and hugs me tightly. "Merry Christmas!"

"Merry Christmas," I respong happily.

The three other women look at me and smile after a few seconds of staring freakishly at me. "Hi, I'm Claire." I decide to say.

Lynn pulls them over to me and introduces me to her mother, Edith, George's mother, Juanita and her sister Linda. They all smile even bigger and Edith hugs me.

"She's Andrew's girlfriend," Lynn decides to add.

Edith gasps and hugs me again. "You are so pretty, Claire. Andrew is lucky to have you."

"Thank you," I say, almost calling her by her name, but holding back in case it's inappropriate right now. "Where would you like me to put these gifts?"

Lynn looks down at the bag full of their gifts. "You can put them under the Christmas tree downstairs. You didn't have to get anybody anything, Claire."

I nod my head. "But I did. Andrew especially."

I hear thudding of feet coming from upstairs. Andrew appears in the kitchen. He looks carefully at us and adjusts his glasses on his nose. "What are you ladies talking about, huh?"

"You," I respond, although it's only partially true.

He snaps his fingers. "I knew it."

Lynn and Edith roll their eyes, looking almost identical. "Andrew, your girl here is just the prettiest thing."

He looks at me and says, "I know."

I have to keep myself from turning red. It's hard to when he says things like that.

Andrew grabs a deviled egg from the tray and dips a finger in the giant cauldron of mashed potatoes. "Let's go downstairs, Claire bear," he instructs and grabs the gift bag from me.

"Nice meeting all of you," I say to his grandmother's and aunt.

Andrew pulls me farther down the staircase. "They like to talk. It was best if we just walked away."

As anyone can expect, the football game the Broncos have to play today. That would personally piss me off if I was a pro-football player that has to play on Christmas Eve. But, thankfully, I'm not a pro-football player.

I guess his family has heard about me because they all somehow know my name and that Andrew and I are boyfriend and girlfriend.

God, it sounds so good finally saying that. I feel like my life is going exactly like I always hoped it would. I just never thought the boyfriend I dreamed of having would be Andrew.

"Merry Christmas, Claire bear," he says and lifts me onto his lap.

"Merry Christmas," I say, leaning my head against his shoulder.

Addie and her pure cowboy boyfriend walk into the living room. Except they look happier than normal and it's not a bad thing.

"Claire!" She yells when she sees me.

I try to greet her, but Andrew's arms are tightly locked around my stomach. He's not going to let me free and he chuckles.

Addie sits down by Andrew so she can talk to me. "Are you comfortable?"

I laugh and nod my head. "We're saving room," Andrew says. "You're welcome."

Addie rolls her eyes and stares at the TV where the Broncos are on their third down and over halfway to the end zone. Andrew and all the guys in the room lean forward in their seats.

"Go, go, go!" George yells.

Andrew's fingers squeeze my stomach even tighter with eagerness.

The player gets tackled just after he crosses the end zone. Andrew stands up and holds me in the air. "Woo!"

I start laughing at his funny behavior and he sits back down, still tightly keeping his arms around my stomach. "You're acting very hyper today."

"There's a lot of food, Broncos are winning, it's Christmas Eve and you're sitting on my lap," he lists. "How much better can this day get?"

I'm part of the reason he's having a good day?

I snuggle against him again and unhook his arms from my waist so I can hold them. I just want to turn around on his lap and kiss him. I want to kiss him a lot. I know he wants to kiss me too by his lips trailing to the back of my neck.

When halftime rolls around, Addie places herself in the front of the room with her hands hanging behind her back. "I have a couple announcements to make."

"I bet they fucked," Andrew whispers in my ear.

I have to hold in my laughter, but I look back at him, anxious to hear what she has to say.

She holds up her hand. "Mark and I are getting married!" The room starts to get noisy but she silences them. "And, we're having a baby!"

George and Lynn are the first to hug and congratulate Addie and Mark.

A baby and a wedding? They're in for a really busy year.

Andrew rubs my waist and I climb off his lap to congratulate Addie with him. I don't know what George said to her, but she is happily shedding tears.

"Addie," says Andrew, "congrats. They embrace each other and I see her close her eyes as she grips him.

I faintly hear her whisper, "I'm so sorry, Andrew. I hope you know I really am."

He nods his head when they pull away. "I know."

She was apologizing for what she put him through growing up, is what it sounds like. They must be finally working through their differences.

He's forgiven her.

I hug Addie next, much shorter than everyone else does, and I say, "Congrats on both the wedding and the baby, Addie! How far along are you?"

She presses her stomach. "Almost two months."

"Well," I say. "That's really amazing."

She nods, trying to stop crying. Addie stares at me for a long time, whether she's studying me or thinking I'm not sure.

"You know," she finally says. "He's been really happy since you two were a couple. It's great to see him like this. You mean a lot to him."

I nod my head to show her I understand.

"Andrew!" yells Austin excitedly. "We're gonna be uncles!"

Andrew laughs and nods. "Pretty badass uncles, buddy."

"Yeah," he agrees with his brother. "Badass uncles."

Andrew continues laughing in amusement of getting Austin to curse. "I didn't tell you that if Mom asks."

"Food is ready!" Linda announces from the kitchen.

Andrew pushes past the crowd and sprints full-speed got he smell of amazing food. The front of the line consists of all hungry men that are palming to fill their plates.

Lynn rolls her eyes. It's disgusting how much they eat," he remarks. "Claire, honey, you can go get your plate."

"I'm going to wait until the line dies down."

A few minutes later Andrew appears with two plates in his hands.

"Jesus, Andrew, are you that hungry?" Addie asks.

"They're not both for me," he says. "One's Claire bear's." He hands me a plate with ironically everything I like.

"Thanks," I say.

He winks at me in return, pressing our foreheads together. Just a little further and I'll be satisfied...just a little further. Our lips shortly meet, leaving me wanting more.

I always seem to want just a little bit more.

Andrew takes me up to his room with his gift in my hands. We sit on his bed together, me cuddling as close as I can to him.

"The wrapping is a piece of shit, but I hope you like it anyway," he says.

"I know I will," I say, enjoying the comfort of his amazing bed. I begin unwrapping the small box, wondering what he got me. In my hands I hold a silver iPhone 5s. I look at his smiling face. "Oh my God, Andrew."

He pulls the tape off the box. "Look on the back of the phone."

Curiosity is running around in my body. I hold the bare phone and flip it over to see the engravement on the back that reads:

You'll always be my Claire bear. I love you. -Andrew.

I put my hand over my moth and look at him again. "Oh my God! Oh my fucking God, Andrew!"

"Do you like it?" I feel his hand wrap around my waist.

"Like it?" I shake my head at him. "I absolutely love it! What makes you think I would not like it? You got it engraved and everything!"

He nods his head, smirking. "I hope it's the color you wanted. It's already processed, too. Your mom helped me out with that one."

Now it's making sense. "That's why I haven't been able to find my phone the past couple days. I can't believe you got me an iPhone, Andrew, my god."

His lips are warm against my cheek. "There's something else too," he says as he rises from the bed. He rummages through his drawer and holds a shiny bracelet and two packs of gum.

"I got you gum because I owe you at least one pack," he says, laughing along with me. "And I got you a bracelet to match your Claire necklace. That was a really good choice on my part." His finger curls around my necklace. "You seem to like it a lot."

We don't lose eye contact. I'm simply too surprised by what he just admitted to me.

Andrew was my secret admirer and I was too stupid to figure out the signs?

"Wait," I say, smiling, yet confused. "You are my secret admirer? You gave me the necklace and left a pack of gum in my locker? How'd you even get it?"

He chuckles. "Susanna is office aide and she's desperate enough for my attention that she cracked into the system and gave me your locker combination," he explains. "So it wasn't too hard to get ahold of."

I nod my head, pleasantly surprised still. "The necklace and the bracelet are beautiful, by the way. I love them, they're definitely my favorite accessory pieces I own." His arm is around me, his hand running up and down my arm. "Thank you."

"You're welcome," he responds, pressing our lips together. "You know, I thought you already knew I was your admirer but you decided not to say anything. You're a smart girl, I'm surprised you didn't ever know, or at least suspect?"

I shake my head. "I didn't have a clue. But thanks for actually telling me."

We fall onto our backs and I sit on his stomach, my hands exploring around his body. I really want to take his shirt off.

"I need to show you your present now," I say, kissing him shortly.

He sits up and I join him back on the bed. "It a little heavy."

He eyes me oddly and pulls out the art set. His hands run over the plastic covering it and he stares at the utensils included inside the kit. "Jesus Christ, Claire bear," he astonishingly says.

"Do you like it?" I curiously ask him, biting my lip nervously. I look at the cool things inside of it with him. "I wasn't sure if you used oil pastels or painted at all, but I knew you would bring the colored pencils to good use."

He looks at me and clinches his jaw. "You think my present was awesome? This one is even better. I actually do use oil pastels occasionally." He hooks our hands together. "Thank you, Claire," he says, pulling me closer to him. "This is simply...outstanding."

I nod my head in satisfaction. "I'm glad you like it. Oh, and I also have some cologne," I say, pulling the bottle out of the bottom of the gift bag. "I thought it smelled good."

He lifts it to his nose and sniffs. Nodding his head, he closes his eyes. "It's good, but really strong."

There's something about the way he looks at me that forces a smile across my lips. He doesn't lose any concentration on my face or anywhere. He just stares.

"Merry Christmas, Claire bear," he slowly says as we lie on our backs on his bed.

I place my hand over his, moving my face closer to him. "Merry Christmas, Andrew."

His nose brushes against my cheek and then I feel his lips. "I love you," he whispers so quietly it barely seems like he said it.

"I love you, too," I respond, lying on my side so I can look at him easily.

I climb on top of him and rest my chin on his chest. The longer I stare into his eyes the more skeptical I become about how I ended up with Andrew. Why he would choose me over all the girls chasing after him?

But that's just it. He chose me over all of them and I chose him. And we'll continue choosing each other.
