*Alpha’s POV*
“This is an incredibly powerful threat hanging right over us, I’m afraid that if we don’t take action soon, the rogues will!” I was disappointed with their response. I may love my pack, but they were too proud of themselves that they can’t even see the dangerous heading towards them.
I studied the faces of each and every person and was sickened by their utter confidence that, in my opinion, had no base. I sighed. If his pack did not want to act then i would not force them. That is the burden of what is call fairness.
My eyes landed on the only silent person in the room. Alexis Morbern. Her delicate face was scrunched into a frown. She looked so much like her Mother, her spirit too. It hurt me to think of Ally, her mother and Mark, her father. Their terrible deaths still haunted me.
They had begged me, before the battle, to look after her and their other two kids if they didn’t survive. I had tried, I knew what was going at her. How she was treated. But i couldn’t do anything to protect her from that. I may be the alpha of this pack but I was completely useless in defending her.
When I first heard about the abuse she went through I was ultimately shocked to see that it was Clara, Marco and my son Ashley who were her main tormentors. Those four had been so close when they were little. Marco and Alexis had been completely inseparable until the attack. I had loved those four children, but after having only found out about it a couple of years ago I was extremely disappointed in them. They were the ones who could protect her, not me, but they chose to torment her instead. I was never really able to look at my Son properly after I discovered that fact.
Her light green eyes rose up to mine, eyes just like her Fathers, eyes that froze me to the core and scared the shit out of me, and she can never know why, poor girl. Her jaw dropped when I asked “What do you think?” It was a simple question but the whole room suddenly filled with sliceable tension. I suddenly worried that having put her on the spot; I would just cause more damage to her. She had never talked in the pack meetings but always seemed to stare out the window. I emphasise on the seemed.
As her eyes were never dreamy as she stared out, but alert and calculating. I saw the shock in her features and patiently said once again. “About the rogue problem, what do you think?” My eyes held hers and she stumbled out an answer.
She sounded just like her mother. I wasn’t really all that shocked at her small speech on the matter of the rogues. I knew Alexis was incredibly smart, and that she had been secretly sneaking into the library to study the rogues. I always tried to help her by leaving some helpful books in easy to see places.
I watched her for a couple seconds as my mind swam n darker memories until her squirming brought me out and I looked away. I knew that the pride I was feeling showed in my eyes and I made sure that she could see the small smile on her lips and as I sneaked a glance back at her I saw that she, too, had a small smile.
*Alexis’s POV*
I was fairly deep into the forest when I sensed the four hot bodies behind me. Knowing that I wouldn’t be able to escape them I slowly turned to face my punishment.
Clary with her beautiful features and long blonde hair, Marco with his straight sandy-blonde hair and well-built façade, Simon (my brother’s best friend) with his fuzzy dark brown hair and elongated body and Ashley, my heart panged when I saw him. His wild and constantly messy black hair, malice-filled sweet blue eyes and lanky but muscled form sent my heart pounding.
I had been in love with him for wolf-knows-how-long, but it was a long time and despite his treatment to me I still loved him. He had never hit me before, but had always watched and was always ready with those harsh hateful words. The one time he had really done me any physical damage was when we had been 10. I had been crying about being bullied, as I constantly did back then, on the edge of my favourite lake.
It was a beautiful small area with the cliché green grass, shining sun, brightly coloured butterflies and just as bright flower bunches. I had loved the place the moment my parent’s had taken me to it. It was my fourth birthday present. They had told me it was a secret place, where both my Mother and Father had come to play when they were my age.
It was in winter and the weather was wintery enough to make the lake freezing cold, but not actually freeze over. I had been sitting on my favourite rock, my hands tracing and retracing over my parent’s names that they had carved into the stone surface not too soon after the discovery that they were mates. It had only made me cry harder and the tears were ice-cold on my face.
Ash had come up behind me and tapped me on the shoulder. I had shown him the place when I was 6, his Mum had died and I had taken him to my secret spot to cheer him up. Only he had known about it. My secret place where I went to cry and my only sanctuary.
My 10 year old self had been so happy to see my old friend. I knew that the others had been mean to me, but he had never really hurt me. My love-deprived mind had taken that as a form of safety and kindness from him.
I had run to Ash and hugged the warm body, inhaling the warm foresty smell that I loved so much. He had patted my hair and whispered to me over and over “You’re alright, you’re okay.” We were standing right next to the freezing lake when he pulled back and roughly pushed me away from him.
I had frowned at the sudden hit of cold and the smirk that was on his face. “What?” I had whispered. His smirk grew wider and said the words that had ripped the already tattered 10 year old me apart. “Loser, don’t touch me.” And then shoved me hard.
I collided with the lake painfully and screamed as the freezing cold water chokingly smothered me. As my weak form struggled to keep my head above water i heard the undeniable laughed of my ex-mates. They had stood over me my Brother, Sister and Crush laughing their heads off at my pain.
After a lot of struggle my hand had finally gripped the edge of the icy-lake and I had weakly dragged my body up and over onto the river bed only to be scaringly kicked in the stomach. My wide eyes had latched onto Ash’s accusingly.
He had shown them here. He had taken away my place, my sanctuary. The last thing I had left of my parent and had shoved it down my throat. The tears welled in my eyes and my heart constricted painfully. I had closed my eyes and blacked out, my last thought being the painful curse of my life. Alone.
