For Kailey.
After work Sarah drove to UNITS small medical facility where her husband had been getting treatment for physical therapy since he lost the use of his legs in hope they could heal. She signed the proper forms and time she was picking him up when his therapist walked over to her side looking nervous and saddened.
"Mrs. Smith?"
"Yes? Is he still cleaning himself up?" She asked knowing he tended to get caught up talking with the others in the same situation he was in.
"No, he didn't want to participate today, he doesn't seem to be in the best mood. I tried asking and he mentioned something happened at work that had upset him. I just wanted to let you know in advanced Ma'am." The young nurse explained glancing down at his clip board of The Doctors progress.
Sarah nodded and looked up where he sat in his wheelchair looking out the window at the setting sun and clouds overhead.
"Thank you, I'm sorry he's not being cooperative today. It's not your fault and I'll talk to him tonight." Sarah said softly to the nurse before he left to help another patient. Sarah Jane walked over and up to him and wrapped her arms around his neck, kissing his cheek. The Doctor leaned into her kiss and rested his head on her arm not saying a word.
"Things didn't go well today?" She asked softly not wanting to pretend she was oblivious. The Doctor sighed.
"They want me to have an assistant to help me in UNIT. They don't think I can function well without an extra set of hands to help me with the room and it's accessibility. " he explained leaning on her. Sarah could feel the frustration of his disability radiating from him as he watched the soldiers marching in formation to the dining hall to eat.
"I'm sorry honey. I know how worried you are about it but I'm sure we can talk to the Brigadier about it..." She said kissing him again.
"No, I think I'm done with UNIT. I can't work here anymore and everyone knows it. I've been talking to Harry and he's been setting up papers of citizenship and work papers for me along with an ID and birth certificate. I've been looking elsewhere for work." He mumbled softly grabbing the wheels and turning around to face her. Sarah looked solemnly at him, seeing and hearing the heartbreak in his voice and eyes.
"Can we just go home? I don't really want to talk about this anymore." The Doctor said zipping up his hoodie.
"Sure, I already signed you out." Sarah said holding the door for him as he wheeled himself out of the center and to their car. The drive home was mostly quiet until Sarah broke the silence and smiled.
"It's date night on Friday...you want to go out or stay in and watch a romantic movie with me?" Sarah asked feeling a blush rise onto her cheeks looking at the handsome man she called her husband. The Doctor smiled.
"I haven't broken out my nice suit you like in a while but I know you haven't been sleeping so well and I don't want you to be tired." He said looking back at her.
Sarah sighed happily at the thought of him in a suit again and practically grew wet thinking about his hands on her hips and him cuddling against her. The Doctor smiled looking ahead at the road and held her hand in his own.
When they got home The Doctor wheeled inside once he was put back in his wheelchair he rolled to his desk in their room while Sarah changed out of her dress from work. She pulled on a pair of leggings and one of The Doctor's hoodies taking in the smell with a happy sigh. She heated up some leftovers and walked into the office where he sat working at his desk.
"I brought you dinner sweetheart..." She said setting down the plate and sitting in the chair next to him.
"Thank you my love. You take such good care of me...." He said softly moving his papers and folders. Her heart sank, hating that he was unhappy with his life. Sarah glanced at the paper he was looking at wondering if he was looking through the mail when she caught the words "experimental drug testing" before he put it away.
