I woke up to the sound of sea lions barking outside my window. A smile crept onto my face as I stretched and got out of bed. Walking over to my closet, I pondered my outfit for the day.
What should I wear today?
I settled on a pair of jeans, a long black shirt, my sandals, and a thick coat—it was freezing outside.
Once I was dressed, I headed downstairs and made myself a bowl of oatmeal, adding strawberries, cinnamon, and blueberries.
I sighed. Home alone again.
My parents were both surgeons, constantly working late nights or traveling for business. Sometimes, I wouldn't see them for days. But they made sure I had everything I needed.
After finishing my breakfast, I cleaned my dish, grabbed my house keys, my Canon Rebel T6 camera, and my phone, then headed for the door.
The moment I stepped outside, the crisp ocean breeze hit my face. Seagulls called out overhead, and the distant barking of sea lions echoed against the rocky shore. I smiled. Such a beautiful day.
Carefully, I made my way down the old wooden stairs leading to the beach, making sure to avoid any splinters. As soon as my feet touched the warm sand, I slipped off my sandals, wiggling my toes into the softness.
The waves crashed against the rocks, and the salty air filled my lungs—it was peaceful.
I took the lens cap off my camera, turned it on, and zoomed in, snapping pictures of the sea lions lazing on the shore. Then, I turned my camera to the ocean, capturing the waves as they rolled in.
That's when I saw it.
Something—or someone—was lying on the shore.
I zoomed in closer. My breath hitched. Is that a boy?
Heart pounding, I grabbed my things and sprinted toward him.
As I got closer, my steps slowed. He was breathtaking—pale white skin, thick dark lashes, soft pink lips. He looked like he was of Asian descent.
His lips look so kissable...
I shook my head. Focus, Vanessa! You can't kiss a beautiful dead boy!
But then I saw it—his chest rising and falling.
Thank goodness. He's alive.
"Hey, wake up," I said, lightly tapping his face.
His eyes fluttered open. "What?" he mumbled.
He slowly sat up, and that's when I noticed—he was completely naked.
"Ah!" I shrieked, throwing my hands over my eyes.
"What's wrong?" he asked, genuinely confused.
"W-why are you naked?" I stammered, still covering my face.
"Oh, sorry. I usually wear my suit," he said nonchalantly.
"Well... put it on!" I blurted out.
"Alright. But don't be scared."
I peeked through my fingers just in time to see him pull on something that shimmered in the light.
The next second, where the boy once sat, a sea lion stared back at me.
I screamed.
