But if you spread your wings
You can fly away with me
But you can't fly unless you let yourself fall

NEW YEAR'S EVE

I rubbed my hands up and down my arms, trying to create some warmth. The airport was absolutely freezing and I regretted not grabbing my coat on the way there. I had driven my new car, and it was absolutely perfect. It drove smoothly and the radio connection couldn't be better. I was currently waiting to pick up Liam from the airport. His flight was delayed, but apparently had already arrived. A group of people appeared at the door opening and I crane my neck, in search of Liam's messy curls (this was back when he had curly hair). I caught a glance of a familiar face and soon I was off running towards him.

"Liam!" I shouted. I tackled him down in a hug before he even realized who it was.

"Hey Gene! Miss me? Wait, no, don't answer that. I know you did." He smirked cockily and I rolled my eyes.

"Not at all, actually." I lied. We began walking towards the airport parking lot.

"I can't believe you survived this long without me." Liam laughed and I grinned back.

"Me neither." I added honestly. Liam told me about Christmas with his family as I drove us back to his apartment.

"It was rather horrible, and I'm very pleased that I managed to escape early." He concluded.

"Wow, that sounds pretty bad. What did they serve for Christmas dinner again? Oysters and clams? Eww." I made a face as I pulled into the parking lot.

"I wish you were there, that would've been a laugh. It'd actually make dinner worthwhile to see your face." He smiled at me and I returned it with just as much enthusiasm. "How was your Christmas?"

"It was....interesting." I told Liam about being somewhat drugged and almost having sex with Niall. Liam listened intently as we entered his apartment.

"Wow. If he took advantage of you, I would've beaten the shit out of him." Liam said when I finished.

"I know you would." I laughed and helped him unpack.

"Anyways, I have to go to this fancy dinner thing for my mom tonight, and she told me I had to bring a date...." Liam trailed off and eyed me hopefully.

"What!? Listen to what you just said! "Fancy" and "Gene" do not go together, Liam." I shook my head and scoffed,

"Aww, c'mon! It's just for dinner and then we can leave, I promise!"

I hesitated and battled with myself. I absolutely hated dressing up and socializing with people, or should I say, I hated talking to mature adults. It just wasn't my forté , okay?

"Hey, just a reminder, but I let you drag me to that party thing." Liam reminded me.

I groaned in defeat and Liam grinned, knowing I had given in.

"Fine, but just be happy that Niall has to go somewhere tonight, as well."

"Yah, yah. Whatever. Do you have any like fancy dresses? It's some kind of thing for her company, people are getting pretty dressed up for it. I myself am wearing a suit." Liam bragged. I laughed as he pulled out a rather nice looking black tuxedo.

"Very nice, Mr. Payne. I'm impressed." I said sarcastically. Liam rolled his eyes at me.

"It's basically required, my mom is forcing me to wear this." He groaned. "Well you going, can be your Christmas present to me."
