noun
the state of having been abandoned and become dilapidated.

The engine spluttered out with a muffled groan.

Dan was left with his thoughts once more as he sat in silence ( |-/ ), motionless as the rain poured down around him from inside the refuge of his car.

He watched as the tiny droplets fell from the sky and splattered onto his windscreen, working intricate patterns from water on the glass.

A gentle sigh escaped his lips.

This was it. This was his new home.

He decided to admire it from where he sat instead of risking the pouring rain that awaited him outside.

It was a fairly neat place, all faded woodwork with grey trimmings and roof. He could see the paint had started to peel even from this distance but that didn't bother him.

He didn't need a grand, perfect house.

Just somewhere, anywhere to get away.

*flashback*

His food sat on the plate untouched as he swirled his pasta around his fork.

He had no intention of eating it.

Looking up, he could see his parents out of the corner of his eye happily enjoying their meals.
Everything became quiet, it seemed. Dan could hear the gentle patter of rain on their roof.

He took a silent, deep breath in and then out. Using all the strength he could muster to stay calm, he wasn't going to panic, not now.

In... out...

It was now or never.

"Uh, mum, dad, I-I think I might be gay."
His mother was the first to look up, a mix of shock and then confusion obvious on her face.

"What did you just say, Daniel?" She questioned.

"Um, w-well I've been thinking about it for a while now, and I've made up my mind. This is who I am."

His father finally raised his head, looking at him with a face of disgust although it soon turned to anger. He rose from his chair and slammed his fist down on the table, making both Dan and his mother jump.

"What do you mean you're gay?" He spat at Dan.

"I thought your mother and I raised you to be good!"

"Dad, listen..." He began but was interrupted by his fathers' strong grip on his wrist.

"This is not who we raised you to be, and it's not who you're going to become," Dan's father yelled, his grip tightening.

"Dad, please," Dan whispered, trying to hide his tears, trying not to show any sign of weakness.

"Do not speak back to me. You are a sinner and you deserve nothing but hell!" Dan was then grabbed by the collar and thrown up against the wall.

"Dad!" Dan tried to yell, but it came out (ha... Sorry) as barely a whisper.

"You're a weak, weak boy, just like all of the other fags out there."

He pushed Dan hard against the wall once more, causing him to fall to the ground.

"You deserve nothing more. Get out of my house!"

A muffled sob escaped Dan's lips as his dad marched out of the room, soon followed by his concerned mother.

Then he cracked.

Loud cries erupted from Dan. He was far too gone to hold them back and besides, why did it matter? He'll be out of here by tomorrow morning.

*flashback*

"Fuck it," Dan muttered.

He reached for the car door, carelessly
throwing it open and then slamming it shut, and ran into the pouring rain.
