disconcert or confuse (someone)After struggling with the key for 15 minutes Dan had managed to make his way inside his new sanctuary.
The house was sparse and empty aside from the minimum amount of furniture that had been abandoned by the last tenant. An outdated oven and an obviously abused refrigerator occupied the kitchen but other than that, there was nothing else to keep him company.
'Great, an even more depressing surrounding' Dan thought to himself.
He only had three boxes to unpack. He didn't have much time to collect his belongings before escaping the grips of his parents. And there was only so much one could climb out a window with.
Within an hour Dan had settled into the place. For a couple of nights, he would be sleeping on the floor, a bed was not one of his priorities at the moment.

It took Dan three hours to fall asleep, he awoke with a crooked neck and piercing pain in his back.
He must have slept for four hours at the most. He had planned on sleeping in, but a persistent disturbance had been ringing the doorbell for 10 minutes. Dan decided it was best to not ignore them.
Dan hadn't bothered to fix himself before opening the door, which he instantly regretted when he saw who was behind the constant noise that had woken him.
The stranger had unnaturally black hair swept to the right, upon his broad shoulders rested a black coat covering a pastel green button up. The man was taller than Dan, but he also had better posture than him.
Dan finally looked up to lock eyes with the stranger, only to find the other's eyes drifting down over Dan's figure. That's when Dan became painfully aware of the cold air hitting his bare chest. In his haze to answer the door, he had forgotten a shirt.
'Good one Dan' he thought.
Dan stood awkwardly, waiting for the stranger to stop staring intently at his collar bones. Then their eyes met, and Dan was lost. His mind was carried out into the sky that was held within the other's eyes.
"Hello? Is anyone in there?" The stranger poked Dan's temple bringing him back to reality.
"Yeah, yeah sorry. What did you say?"
"My name is Phil, short for Phillip, I live next door in apartment 5." He had an odd cheeriness for someone who was awake at 7 am.
"Oh, I'm Dan. I just moved in. But I guess you already knew that." The stranger named Phil laughed. He had a smile that could make birds sing. Dan wanted to make him smile more.
"I brought you cookies as a housewarming present. I hope you like cookies." He paused before placing his hand on his chin "Well I think everyone likes cookies. You'd be mad not too....."
After Phil's small rant about cookies Dan invited him inside and to get out of the cold - that was the only reason. Well, that's what Dan had told himself anyway.
Once Dan had moved Phil into the kitchen along with the cookies, he excused himself to find appropriate attire for having a guest over.
When he returned back to the kitchen, the stranger named Phil was gone. For awhile he thought he'd just up and left until he found Phil in the lounge room, annoyedly whispering as he fiddled with the outdated heater fixed to the wall.
"What are you doing to my heater?" Dan walked over to stand beside Phil so he could properly see what he was doing.
"I'm switching it off." He had his tongue poked out to one side as he resumed pressing buttons.
"But it's fucking winter, I'm going to get hypothermia without it!" Dan ran his hands through his hair as he reassessed his friendship with the stranger named Phil.
"Firstly, mind your language. Secondly, you weren't even wearing a shirt this morning. And Thirdly, these heaters have been here for like 30 years. They're a fire hazard, if you turn it on or if it turns itself on you will burn down your apartment. Do you understand?"
Dan nodded and promised to not touch the heater under any circumstances.
"We wouldn't want you burning down the house now," Phil laughed partly to himself but Dan couldn't find it in himself to laugh as well.
