"You know, Lorelei," began Alice. "You really must stay for tea."

"Well, alright," I said, giving in to Alice, as normal.

One thing about Alice is that she always gets what she wants, and nothing gets in the way of that. I let one of Alice's men take my coat, and then I sat down.

"By Jove, Lorelei!" exclaimed Alice suddenly. "You have been looking rather different lately."

"Is that a good thing or a bad thing?" I inquired, in a state of shock.

"Why, it's a good thing, of course," said Alice. "You are becoming a young woman, and a beautiful one at that."

"Maybe beautiful, but never quite as lovely as you, Alice," I said, sighing.

And it was true. Alice was, indeed, lovely. Her blue-green eyes shone like the sea, and her long golden curls framed her long, pretty face well.

"Ah, Lorelei. I am growing older, day by day. My youth is almost gone, and I have been rather sickly lately. So, naturally, I have been worried, for whom shall my possessions be given once I have passed on?" mused Alice.

"I haven't the slightest bit of an idea," I responded, having a sip of the tea.

"It ought to be you," said Alice. "You could handle my fortune well."

"I shall think about it," I said, checking my watch. It was time to return home, so my mum wouldn't know where I had been. "But, for now, I must be going!"

Back to Lorelei's "Real" World

"Lorelei!" called Mum, from the kitchen. "Please assist me with supper."

I hurried to the kitchen as fast as my bony legs could, and stood in front of Mum. She instructed me to slice the vegetables for the stew and place them in the boiling water, and then she walked away. I rested my elbow on the counter whilst the vegetables bounced up and down in the bubbling water.

After about half an hour, Mum returned.

"We shall eat now," she said.

Supper was quiet and uneventful. Mum sat at the end of the table, silently eating her stew. I rose up from my chair, and walked up to my attic bedroom. My house was certainly not like Alice's, for mine was small and only two people lived there: me and Mum. We didn't have anyone to wait on us, or make up our beds. That was our duty alone.

"Maybe it would be best if I stayed with Alice," I thought.

I sighed and closed my eyes, deciding the world had gotten enough of me that day.
