Cooper woke up to the sun shining through his dusty blinds. He stepped out of his bed onto the cold wooden floor, when he smelled something from the kitchen. He walked around the corner into the kitchen. His mom was slaving over a bowl, mixing up a batch of pancake mix. She made pancakes every Saturday morning.
"Have you seen your father," Kathy inquired without looking up.
"He's probably working," Megan said as she pushed her way past Cooper. She had just gotten up from bed. She was still in her pajamas.
Cooper looked at his mom and furrowed his eyebrows at what sounded like a sigh of relief from his mom.
"Are we doing anything today?" Cooper asked as he perched himself on the stool at the island.
"Probably not," his mother replied. She was done mixing the batter and was about to pour the batter into the pan.
"Oh." Cooper didn't mind not going outside or socializing, but he did get bored.
After getting his brother, the family sat down for a surprisingly happy breakfast. The atmosphere felt different. Know one knew why, but they all felt it. Conversation flickered on and off.
Everyone finished up and cleaned up the dishes. While walking back to his room, Cooper looked down and saw last week's newspaper on the ground next to the trash can. It's title read "Another Victim Stolen." Cooper shook his head. Then, he knew he had a mission. He was going to find out all he could about that retched beast. He closed the door and turned on his computer.
Cooper spent the rest of his day researching the Nukkus. It was said that the Nukkus used to be a human. It had a family. One day after having dinner, someone forgot to turn off the wood stove. Whilom everyone was asleep, the house burnt to ashes. no one knew so everyone was scorched to death.. all except the monster. The Nukkus woke up in the his burnt house. It was not entirely rubble, for it was just the external walls. Nothing else had survived. The Nukkus woke up and called for help, but no one answered him. He slipped into a coma. He woke up days later hungry and with poor vision. He couldn't find anything to eat and started turning on humans. He goes to families and takes members one by one. After he steals the whole family, he has a "grand feast". He unknowingly skipped lunch.
Cooper was snapped out of focus when he heard the phone ring. He peaked out his door.
"Hello?"
"What do you mean he didn't come, he's been there all day!"
"Uh-huh."
"Ok, thank you."
Kathy hung up the phone and sat down on the couch. Cooper went into the living room.
"Mom, what happened?"
"Well, your father never went into work today."
"But - ," Cooper started.
"They said they are looking for him," she interrupted.
"The police?"
"Yes. He's probably just out somewhere," Kathy tried to recover.
Megan came around the corner with Tyler following behind. Everyone was sitting in the living room now.
"But he will come back right," Tyler asked.
Kathy nodded her head unsure. She kissed the top of Tyler's head.
They talked some more, and eventually went to bed.
