Chapter 12: The Unknown
Harvey watched the girl as she coughed and spluttered, trying weakly to splay her hands across the cold ground and get a bearing of where she was.
One of her legs was chained to the wall, a heavy metal clasp encircling her dainty ankle. Her hair was tangled and pieces of ash were loitering in it, making her angelic appearance seem wasted and grey.
Harvey did not know why his boss had called him in the early hours of the morning, demanding to meet with him, but he did know that the girl lay before him was in grave danger.
Pulling his phone from his pocket, Harvey dialled his boss.
"Harvey? That you?" his gruff voice sounded from the other end.
"Boss," Harvey returned steadily. "She's waking up."
He released a sigh and Harvey wondered if for once, he was contemplating whether or not he actually wanted to make this girls life a living hell.
"I'll be there in twenty, don't leave your post. That's an order," the boss commanded firmly.
Pocketing his phone, the boy with raggedy curls turned to face the girl who had observed the entire encounter with her mouth set in a grim line.
"Who are you?" her delicate voice rasped, scratchy and dry.
Harvey looked at her, his gaze pitiful.
"That's not important," was his response.
The girl was angry now, and started tugging relentlessly at the chain that held her down. The racket she was making was giving Harvey a headache, so he stepped towards her in a way that may have been perceived as threatening, when really he was only offering her the bottle of water that he held in his left hand.
She accepted it gratefully; chugging down the water like her life depended on it.
The girl stayed quiet after that, pulling her knees up to rest her chin on them. Harvey watched her curiously. What on earth could the boss want with her? Harvey thought to himself.
"What's your name?" Harvey asked quietly, curiosity getting the better of him.
"Ellie," the girl returned solemnly, glancing up at the brown haired boy.
"I'm Harvey," the boy stated, dragging forward a chair that rested in the far corner of the dungeon-like room. Placing it before the girl, he took a seat, resting his elbows on his knees.
The girl sat quietly, studying the boy who stared at her intently. She faintly remembered the sound of a gunshot going off, and she suddenly went into panic mode.
Grasping the boy's arms, she gave him a good shake, searching his eyes for untold information.
"Where's Dune?" she gasped, forgetting to use his alternate name. "Where's Felix? Did you hurt them?" her tone was one of desperation, a single tear escaping from the corner of her eye.
Harvey did not know how to handle this hysterical girl and swept a hand through his unruly hair.
He was about to respond to her frantic questioning, when the door swung open.
A man in his late forties stood there, his light hair streaked with grey, his trench coat brushing his knees.
The boss was here and nobody was happy about it.
"Dad?" the girls' voice was unsure, and no doubt frightened.
"Ellie, my dear, it's been a while, hasn't it?"
